I've hardly even TOUCHED either of these consoles in my life. But my wife wanted a DS, because she played the Trauma Center ds games as a kid and wanted to get them. I convinced her we should get a 3ds in order to have access to both libraries.

So we got those two, and then I found Smash Bros 3ds really cheap so I got that too. That's our start.

Looking for recommendations. I will say, I very much want games with interesting art and gameplay (think, lets say, Katamari for PS2), which it seems the DS and 3DS line excel at compared to the home consoles.

Any good action games as well. Would also be interested to know if there's many Western RPGs on the consoles. I am not interested in JRPGs, unless there's one that has a really interesting spin on the genre in terms of gameplay or art.

Check out Contact for the DS.

Also Lost Magic was a fun early DS game.

I was going to recommend Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky until that last part. Still has a damn good story though.

There's also Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia and Guardian Signs, which aren't exactly RPGs and make heavy use of the touch screen for "combat". But do NOT play the original Pokemon Ranger. That one is ass.

Kid Icaurs: Uprising is a must

There's some good Kirby Games (though I'd personally avoid Canvas Curse and Mass Attack)

Incidentally if you really wanted to try some old school stuff, there are two collections of Atari's Greatest Hits. Even if the Atari 2600 games on them don't do it for you, they have some of the arcade games on them

I didnt play a lot of 3DS but:
  • Monster Hunter 3U (my fave)
  • Monster Hunter Generations (Only one on my list I havent personally played)
  • Fire Emblem Awakening

More importantly, DS:
  • Castlevania Order of Ecclesia (if you only play one this is it)
  • Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow (not fond of Portrait of Ruin)
  • The World Ends With You
  • Bowsers Inside Story
  • Advance Wars: Dual Strike (best in the series)
  • GTA Chinatown Wars (only gta title I got into, loved the top down view and drug selling system)
  • Rhythm Heaven
  • Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride (Best JRPG and one of the few that managed to keep me hooked)
  • Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time

Damn, after writing out these games, I want to really try to get an Emulator on Steam Deck working and play me some DQV or Mario & Luigi.

Seconding Ghost Trick. Thirding Phoenix Wright Trilogy (Ace Attorney) as well.

Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy Curtain Call is another must, even if you've only played one or two FF games. Nobuo Uematsu is an amazing composer, and this game lets you experience so much of his work.

Elite Beat Agents, and Rhythm Heaven are also great choices if you like rhythm games.

Also seconding Lost Magic. Fun strategy game that makes excellent use of the DS's drawing feature.

Then there's Okamiden, though I'd suggest you play Okami first if you haven't already.

Then, of course, there's The Legend of Zelda: Link Between Worlds. A wonderful sequel to Link to the Past.

There's a good set of remade Dragon Quest games for the DS/3DS as well.

Furthermore, if you never had a Gameboy Advance, there are a bunch of games from that console that can also be played on a 3ds (though I consider a Gameboy SP to be the best console for GBA games). There's the Golden Sun series, Robopon, Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire, Boktai, updated remakes of the Breath of Fire and Phantasy Star series, Fire Emblem, and so much more.

The ds's are one of the easiest systems to mod and download roms for if you want to save some money. You can easily play gameboy and gba games too.

I haven't played 3ds but for ds my favorite games were kirby superstar ultra, pokemon platinum, and zelda phantom hourglass.

I actually started to collect games too. I didn't get games that they have remakes or ports of like Luigi's Mansion 2 coming out.

I bought DKC Returns just yesterday and I'm waiting on Super Mario Land 3D in the mail. I bought SMT 4 and SMT 4 Apocalypse awhile back. I bought Ultra Sun, Pokemon X, and Omega Ruby.

And I have games I've had for a long time which include the One Piece rpg, Monster Hunter 4, Dragon Quest 8, Dragon Quest 7, Dragon Quest 9, Final Fantasy IV remake, Suikoden Tierkries, Mario and Luigi Superstars/Partners in Time/Bowser's Inside Story/the Paper Mario crossover and Dream Team.

I bought Super Mario 64 DS, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, Detective Pikachu, Luigi's Mansion, Bravely Default and Bravely Second, Ocarina of Time 3D and Majora's Mask 3D, Fire Emblem Awakening and Echoes. Super Smash Bros 3DS, Starfox 3DS, Kid Icarus Uprising and Metroid Samus Returns.

Oh and Nintendogs.

I want to get Tales of the Abyss soon. That'll probably be my next game.

Yeah I'm definitely collecting. 3d Land, totally forgot about that one.

As for ports etc, I always opt for originals before ports in 95% of cases, just because ports, across all of gaming history, often have issues with things like lighting or other problems.

Fantasy Life. Trust me bro.

It's actually my favorite game of all time. Though maybe skip it if you can't get the DLC (which you probably can't since the eShop shut down, unless you hack your console, which tbh is a lot easier than it sounds), since the DLC adds quite a bit of stuff to the game.

EDIT: Just saw the comment about JRPGs. I still stand by my FL recommendation though, since it's more of a gathering/crafting game with some minor JRPG elements in it. Probably closer to an Action RPG or something. Idk, I'm not an expert on game genres.

When I went to a Distant Worlds concert around 2013 or so, they had a table set up with a handful of 3ds with Theatrhythm in them. Trying it out got me to go out a buy a 3DS and the game a few days later.

I recommend almost every Kirby game on the device (4 on DS and 4 on 3DS), especially Kirby Superstar Ultra and Planet Robobot. Kirby's Mass Attack might be the most underrated of those (I liked it a lot at least). Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn was one of the final releases on 3DS, and is pretty pricey these days.

For the record, I don't MIND jrpg reccomendations if you feel they are particularly exceptional. I own Chrono Trigger on snes just for how iconic it is. I was just saying I'm not really a fan, so probably not best to reccomend deep cut, light hearted jrpgs that only a jrpg fan would probably enjoy

I like how TC mentions he's not really looking for JRPG recs yet most posts do so anyway. DS and 3DS were basically carrying JRPGs throughout that entire era.
In any case, I'd recommend Etrian Odyssey. It's definitely more of a JRPG with mostly linear progression but it has a lot of DnD style WRPG elements too. Most significantly, the games barely has a plotline and instead much more about the combat, traversing and actively mapping the dungeons, and the events that all have multiple choices. You don't control named characters, you control your own customized guild with classes. Gamefaqs actually lists the first few games as WRPGs lol.
