I mean I don't think humanity will ever forget Will Smith as the actor who slapped Chris Rock cuz of a joke but there was a time where he was 30-50x bigger than any of those sampled artists/bands at their peak...now *poof* gone, barely anyone under 30 remembers he even made music

I feel like you're vastly overstating both how much people care about his music and how much people care about the slap.

It's probably why he doesn't make songs for the movies he stars in any more.

Can you imagine if we've gotten a rap track for I Am Legend?

I'm not that old but I definitely remember Men in Black (the song) being a massive phenomenon and chart topper in the late 90s. It was just the one late 90s album and Wild Wild West song as far as I remember.

Hard disagree. Prior to the slap, his music wasn't really factor beyond nostalgia, but these two things have nothing to do with each other. In ten more years ppl won't really remember the slap other to say "oh yeah". Will was a fading star and after still is.

I still associate the Men in Black song with Will Smith, rather than the original Forget Me Nots.

It was. But that was due to the movie being popular as well. Overall I think most saw his music as a side gig.

A lead actor singing a single about the movie itself seems like something that wouldn't really be done by anyone anymore unless it's animated.

My good sir, I was but a black child, a member of his target audience, when "Parents Just Don't Understand" was released. Even back then none of my friends thought he ever went hard. His raps were funny novelty works, and that was that. He was the 80s Ray Stevens of rap.

You have got to be shitting me. He was made fun of HARD by other more prolific rappers during those days, and I havent heard once that Gen Z or Alpha argued otherwise. He was clowned on so badly that he stopped.

I was a huge Will Smith fan as a kid, so all of those songs were bangers to me. But my favorite Will Smith song is Summertime with him and DJ Jazzy Jeff
