Context

Okoli, a small-scale importer of childrens wear, told CNN that on September 17 she asked her 18,000 followers on Facebook to share their opinions about a tomato puree she bought in place of her usual brands, saying she found it too sweet.

According to the police, Okoli was charged with instigating Erisco Foods Limited, knowing the said information to be false under Section 24 (1) (B) of Nigerias Cyber Crime Prohibition Act.
If found guilty, she could face up to three years in jail or a fine of 7 million naira (around $5,000), or both.

Basically she got her 18,000 Facebook followers, likely not close to all of them, review bomb and ruin a small company. It's against the law to do so in Nigeria.

Slavery not only used to be law but it was against the law to not return escaped slaves to their masters.

Look how many countries have anti gay laws.

You'd change your tune awful quick if you were facing 50 years behind bars because being a Gamefaqs user was made illegal.

I have a conspiracy theory that the lawyer was actually trying to tank the case intentionally by going on the news.

Usually no one wants to talk about litigation to the media, plaintiff or defendant. But this guy goes on the news and completely lays out his client's case for the press. In doing so he makes very few credible points about his client's case. He can't come up with anything compelling that would make the audience say "you know, maybe their case has some
merit." I think he knew the case was actually frivolous but since his firm was paid to work the case (probably via retainer or something so they were already tied into it) he just went on the news to expose what a load of shit the matter is while looking as if he's still doing his job and make it basically impossible for his client to proceed without sticking their foot in their mouth.

I never said it wouldn't cause a business harm. But harm worthy enough for jail time. Absolutely not. As worst, it should be a civil case. Especially if all she asked her followers to do was review the thing.

Ignoring the fact that people in this topic agree with the law, it doesn't really matter if it's stupid or not for my post to be true. I'm assuming people who are openly gay where it's illegal don't get out of jail because the law is stupid.

And I'd leave gamefaqs if it was illegal for some reason for what it's worth.

Oh come on, you can't be that dense.
If an idol said brand X is bad and asked their followers to do a "review", it's obvious that she goaded them to give the same review like hers.

There is no proof of actual review bombing taking place, nor proof that she specifically called on people to review bomb. They seem to be suing her entirely on the merits of her post and her post alone, since she's an influencer.

You still doesn't see the comparison.
They both did "hey guys, i don't like this. Let's do something about it" and their followers blindly doing their biddings.
And Trump escaped jail because this technicality. You said it yourself it was obvious, but why isn't he in jail when it's that obvious? Exactly, because the US law is hanging in that technicalities.

People gonna use this post to accuse me as a Trump supporter, when it was actually pointing out that US laws are so fucking weak that an obvious criminal Trump are not jailed.

Do you think boycotts should be illegal? The problem with review bombs is the notion that it comes from misinformation in which case it can sued for libel but it has to be enough to be considered libel. Simply being negative isnt libel. Otherwise parodies and satire would be illegal.

Boycott is ok, as long it doesn't come with libel. Especially when it has a valid excuse.
