Depends on the context. Squatting homes of people who live there or of people who are on vacation? Trashy. Squatting empty overpriced homes owned by people or companies who milk the market or homes intentionally left unsold to drive up prices of available houses (this happens, its a huge issue in some places)? Go for it dude.

When the houses would actually be abandoned or uninhabited otherwise.

Any way you look at it, I don't know how they're not arrested for breaking and entering when caught. Generally people leave their property locked so they had to break in.

If the property's been abandoned, I don't see a problem. People need places to live, there are less houses to buy, those houses are more expensive, and there are a lot of homeless people.

We even have a term for this: huisjesmelkers (house milkers). They are still protected and there are even political parties for these people with party leaders also being said people. The line between politics and corporations is very thin in The Netherlands, historically so because everything from the East India Company to the monarchy being a corporation from day 1 to creating the actual stock market is what the country was built on, its somewhat accepted because the entire country is basically a large company.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

Funny that goes both ways, the real estate companies that own a lot of empty real estate here are British and American.

Very small, yes. I'm not going to defend a majority of cases.

Its a thing in many cities yes. I even did a project related to this and a local government official basically straight up told me this is simply how it works. I was looking for an empty space for a small period and none of the companies were willing to do anything with their real estate, it had to stay unused.

Its a weird place. Your usual schism between rural and urban but because the country is so small there is no space between said areas. Its a country absolutely filled with buildings, big blocks of corporations, and farms. We have no actual nature, the few things there are are mostly artificial and unsustainable. We are getting very overcrowded. Its projected to become Europes first megacity, it basically already is a proto-form of one. Still one of the better countries to live in, but at a cost.

real squatting where the property is abandoned for 15+ years and the squatter actually does work on it? yes

people breaking into a home that's been empty for a month or two because someone died isn't squatting. that's trespassing.

Here's the things that would make me side with a squatter.
  1. Extreme neglect of the property. Talking like 5+ years.
  2. Owner died with no beneficiary or family.
  3. It's not owned by a person.
  4. The house is some stupid ass mansion like 5+ million dollars or some shit.

the purpose of squatting is to bring abandoned properties back into the housing market.

So Im supportive of it whenever theyve managed to live someplace for like 5+ years cause clearly the property owner was doing nothing with the property if it took them that long to realize it.

When the property clearly hasnt been abandoned, the property owner should be able to kick the squatters out. And have them charged with trespassing if they refuse to leave.
