I'm surprised I keep discovering more features about it as time goes on.

One of them being, how lacking the case that comes with the Steam Deck is. Sure the deck fits inside it, but it has a really pointless gap on the bottom of the case with a thin strap covering it(for the little sheathe you get with the Deck I guess?)& really not much else. The case will only carry the Deck & nothing else. For a 500$+ handheld PC, this is pathetic, & another case or carrying item was one of the first things I needed a new one of from a third party.

Meanwhile for a 200$ controller, the case has a small pouch to put a cable in, & a small velcro opening at the back so the controller can be shut in the case, pop that open, then charge it while inside the case. This is something Valve should do if they make an official case actually worth a shit for the Deck. You also have a little lock that attaches to the back of the controller, where you can secure a USB-C & lock it down very securely so it doesn't pop out of the controller. It locks & unlocks & is a smart little gadget when you can very easily snag a cable & pull it out by accident.

I give a lot of shit to Sony, but sometimes it feels like they do actually try to innovate with their tech & hardware, & while the Edge is a 'luxury' item, I believe it fully warrants the price given the features available to you & for what you get. https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/e/e5c89886.jpg

The Portal is a peripheral that lets you play Playstation games within WiFi of your console, it's not a controller, but a whole separate device. The Dualsense Edge is a higher grade controller strictly.

& yes @Kaiganeer, you can replace the analog sticks entirely so you can pop in Hal Effect joysticks if need be, but you can adjust for deadzone on the Edge as well so I doubt I should have to do that specifically unless I fuck it up sometime so I'll never have drift again

but what makes it worth the $200? Does it actually do anything different? The portal comes with a giant ass screen that lets you play your ps5 from anywhere with good wifi. That sets it apart and gives it value. I dont see where the value comes for just a $200 controller

Is the D-Pad better than the original DualSense? The DualSense's D-Pad sucks.

  • Remappable buttons for any game on the console
  • Profile settings so you can change between controller layouts depending on the game, I have a Tekken 8 profile for better adjustments in fighting games, & one for FF7R because their controller layout is garbage for that game cause SE are idiots when designing menus & UI
  • Adjustment like I said for dead-zone, & additional buttons on the back
  • Trigger press adjustments for less press required, & better touchpad responsiveness
  • Can remove the analog sticks, change the width & height of them
  • Has a nice carrying case that lets you charge it through the back, & a lock to keep the USB-C in
  • Tired of replacing the old Dualshock controllers because of their stick drift & such
There's probably more that I'm not remembering, but given console players usually don't have the ability to remap controls or customize layouts on a per game basis, the controller facilitates that. The Portal is just a hand me down Steam Deck or Switch & doesn't have nearly as much utility given the price & the PS5 still needing to be on & connected to internet. The Portal would be decent if it could cache games on your account, & be played through the cloud without the main system being on & active. Till then it's shit imo.

@Jupiter Yes I think it is, I use it in SF6 & Tekken 8 & the ability to customize dead zones & responsiveness on the controller. I'm not a hardcore player, but it's much more 'stiff' so it doesn't feel like it's squishing in too hard since the D-Pad is one button ofc, & then doing double inputs or something

How much do extra joy sticks cost for the edge?

edit: looked it up, they are $40 for a pair. So i guess you save like $30 when they get the drift issue

Damn, I guess I missed your first topic on the controller.

I've recently been looking into getting this, mainly because I want buttons on the back to have easier access to the face buttons. I got a third party Pro controller for Xbox that has 4 back buttons and I was able to map all the face buttons to it and it was a massive gamechanger. When I play PS5 I mostly play in the Claw position so I never have to take my thumb off the right thumbstick, but this hurts my index finger after a few days of playing (experiencing this now playing through Dragon's Dogma 2).

Now I don't know if the DualSense Edge has four or only two back buttons, but how would you say they feel? If it's only two then it may not be worth it for me as I would probly still Claw sometimes to get the other face buttons.

For the Edge, I feel like I'd have to go out of my way to fuck it up to get really bad Drift since there's a setting on the PS5 that can adjust for deadzone & how the stick moves, so drift should very very rarely be an issue unless you're abusive with the controller. But yeah if you want official sticks, they're 20$ a pop, & then anywhere from 10$-20$ for 2 packs of other OEM sticks but they won't have the function buttons that the stick modules from Sony do. I'm pretty sure they're doing official Hal effect joysticks in the next year that you can trade out

Yeah my playstyle doesn't do claw much but I get what you mean. The Edge has two back bumper buttons you can pop in, & then remap buttons to whatever you want if you want those to be A for the left bumper, & B for the right or something. I like the general use ones, there's two sets. https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/e/e1843c20.jpg
I use the top pair because it better conforms to my grip on the back of the controller, & I haven't tried using the bottom ones because they're a weird shape imo. But they're metal so they are durable & pop in easily, but the bottoms would be good for when you want easy click ins.

Hal effect basically means that in standard joysticks/analogs on controllers, there's a magnetic strip that helps the stick move around in different directions & that strip runs out over time when you move the joystick a lot. So eventually, the magnetic contact point wears down & starts drifting naturally with high use when the potentiometers wear out, & then the electrical resistance between the points causes unwanted inputs.

HAL effect eliminates that by putting another magnetic sensor that uses electricity & differences in voltage to create a conductive service that never physically touches with the other parts, so you won't get the physical wear down that traditional sticks get. Then that magnet moves relative to where the conductor is in the stick, then transmits that position to the console to give you the direction on the analog stick.

One more thing, I should note that Hal joysticks aren't immune to drift. But you'd have to be gaming hard for hundreds of thousands of hours before you'd ever start seeing it, compared to regular sticks where you can see drift in like 50 hours & shit sometimes like with the switch joycons & original controller.

Like the fact I can just pop these out in 1 minute is so nice. I want to replace my deck's joysticks eventually but I'd have to do soldering & shit & connecting wires & crap, too much work. I want them to just pop out like they do on this lol https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/8/8a00353d.jpg
