This can happen.

What type of water did you change it with? Was the water you changed of a substantial change in temperature that it shocked them?

How much of their water did you change?

If it was properly conditioned and the right temperature, it should have been OK.

If the water is from the tap (in US) it needs to sit a day before you use it.

It was a bigger then normal change, I think they must have just been shocked. I typically add prime at the end of the change. But since it was so large i might have waited too long.

If using tap, I'd invest in an RO Buddie that removes the TDS from your water. I got the $60 version off Amazon and it takes away that bleach smell and other impurities.

This is a likely culprit

this is not necessary

this is not true at all

What does your water test kit say? PH, ammonia, nitrites, nitrates

Did you attempt to match your new waters temperature to the tank water?

Did you use a water conditioner (such as Prime) when adding the new water?

How long has it been since the last water change, and how much did you remove/replace?

Is your tank fully cycled?

Yep, my oldest sister bought a fish for one of my younger sisters as a gift but she didn't know to condition the water before putting the fish in the bowl. It died shortly after.

You're better off putting the new water in buckets and adding Prime before the change. Makes it easier to get the right dose.

You're better off doing water changes little and often. 20-25% every week is better than 50% every two weeks. Mind you, turtles are really, really fucking dirty, so I don't know what would be best for you.

Maybe you had nitrogen pockets in the substrate that you disturbed, but I doubt it. Far more likely is temp shock, and/or the water not being properly conditioned.

The only thing that seems off are my nitrites.

I did not match the water, the new water comes from the hose outside.

I did use prime

I only change when I have to. Since the water has been fine up until a few days ago it has been running for a long time. I can't even recall the last change. Of course I would put new water tank got to low.

It is cycled.

They were just little Buenos Aires tetras, but they were so great. They would swim together like the Fish on Finding Nemo.

I have another tank to clean. I think I am going to put that off until the weekend. My Oscar is that one. I have no doubt he can live thru anything but still. Not ready for another accident

Did you use municipal water? It's so full of chlorine and fluoride it'll kill more sensitive fish. One apartment I lived at the tap water smelled like a full on swimming pool

Very common for temperature shock to kill fish. I was always told as a kid when buying fish to sit the bag of water with the new fish in the tank so the temps can balance out.

Fyi, same thing can happen with bunny rabbits.

Yeah, thinking about it now. I guess since normally I do smaller changes or just ad. They were not ready for that change.

The Prime should deal with any chlorine (which is why you should add it first).

I would advise a regular water change schedule, unless you are testing parameters every 2-3 days.

Nope. Theres chemicals that will allow you to treat the water so it wont cause the fish to go into shock and die, as my family knows quite well since we keep a large tank of goldfish in addition to our other animals.
