There haven't been that many total solar eclipses that could been seen in the US.

Omg it covers just a bit more sun. Woopie do. It's not special. I Didn't care back in 84 and I Don't care now. I'm a science nerd too. I think that might be the reason why. Once you understand it, the mechanisms It's not all that special

*I do not care! It's not that special. We've known for a long time that running water exists on other planets. I don't care about possible signs that life once existed on Mars. I wouldn't even care if NASA discovered microorganisms on Mars! Unless it's an animal or something that can walk and talk I don't care! I'm a huge science nerd too!*

It is pretty jarring when it turns from day into night at midday.

Cetainly freaked out the indigenous people when Columbus pretended to cause one.

it's just a cool thing that doesn't happen very often and people want to be there when it happens.

I think the coolest thing to me about eclipses is the way the light shines through leaves. You get a pinhole kind of effect and a bunch of shadows that look like this:

It's not that big of deal friend. It's happened thousands times before it will happen 1000's times more. There is one every few years somewhere on earth. It just happens this time it's over the US. I know people are excited but really It's not that big of a deal. It gets dark then it gets light. We put a lot of significance to this when It's been happening billions of years. Your mars analogy isn't even close. We knew it had water at one point. It's surface has been blasted by solar wind for eons. If there's life it's underground. We won't ever find it running rovers over rock and sand. It's like looking for a needle in a haystack and ignoring places we know on Earth we have found life in the worst of places

Not sure if its been mentioned, but I also heard it was a super moon eclipse, as well

I think it's more about being into nature than science. The people who just like the awe of nature or watch a sunset are probably the ones to most likely enjoy the eclipse.

It must suck for the people who have to drive while the eclipse is in progress and their reason for driving is unrelated to the eclipse. Such as driving to work or coming home from work. Those people might accidentally catch a glimpse of the sun with unprotected eyes if the sun happened to enter their field of view while driving. I'm not sure if this hypothetical scenario would run the risk of causing eye damage to someone's eyes if the exposure to the sun was very brief. Eclipse sunglasses can't be worn while driving for eye protection against possibly getting an accidental glimpse of the sun.

It's at like 2-3 PM, usually at those times the sun is too high in the sky to be a hindrance to drivers.

local PDs have been sending out warnings for months that theyre expecting about a million new people in our area

What will people travelling do after the 3.5 minutes is up? Doesn't seem to be happening in the most exciting parts of the country. Those are like pass-thru states for non residents.

Most people don't choose to live in shithole places just because they hate people so much. When a rare event like this makes your home briefly not a shithole, you can expect the population to breifly rise.

Its special. Is something like aurora borealis not special just because youre a science nerd? Theres obviously a vast difference between knowing why something happens and physically observing it happen in front of you.

Its quite literally a once in a lifetime event for some people.

I just appreciate that people are excited about the event. I just hope these people that are traveling are going to be respectful to the places they are visiting.

Some of my students told me they weren't coming to class today. Some even took the ride to Austin.

My first time in totality. When that last sliver of sun disappears its full on night. You take off your glasses and the sun is black with a kind of bright ring around it. You can see stars. In every direction the horizon is red like a sunset.

I went to a park in rural town on centerline, it seemed like there werent many nonlocals. Now Im taking state routes back instead of interstates and traffic aint bad.

My comment was just tongue in cheek. I wish I had the time and money to see more wonders of nature. I got to see the eclipse from my work and we got like what looked like maybe 97% coverage. The temperatures dropped several degrees and the sky was an unusual dimness that no other time of the day would show.
