I've done this style of poll contest once before, back in either Gen VII or Gen VIII, so why not try it again now? The rules are simple: each day, I'm going to post a poll for a given Pokemon typing, with each generation's roster of new Pokemon filling in that typing. You just need to look at what each generation had to offer, and select which generation you think brought the best new roster (for any reason; you could say that a single Pokemon was so good that it overwhelms everything else the generation spawned, or you could select a generation that may be more well-rounded that the one that created your personal favorite). At the end of the day, one generation will be crowned a champion (with potential tiebreakers if need be), and that generation will advance to a second round, where the eighteen winners, and fourteen strongest runner-ups will be sorted into a 32-entrant tournament to crown which generation produced the best overall roster of a single typing.

Rock had a pretty standard winner with Gen I taking the prize yet again, but it wasn't a blowout, and in fact, most other generations managed to put in comparatively strong showings. Five of the other generations managed to keep things within doubling range, and we ended the round on a tie between Gens II and III (which...ew). Still, interesting results overall.

For today's contest, we have Steel, which had a slow start upon its introduction in Gen II, but it has grown by leaps and bounds since then. Fighting might be my favorite typing overall, but Steel has VERY little in the way of actively BAD Pokemon to present. Given Gen VI's limited roster, I have folder Mega Evolutions into their list, as those were, effectively, some of the new Pokemon created in lieu of brand new designs for Gen VI. I'll keep the same concept for later typings as well. Note: I will not be considering things like Dialga/Palkia's form changes in Gen VIII, as those are still technically the same in the way Giratina's form change was back in Gen IV.

Fire: Gen I (30 Votes, 47.62%)
Bug: Gen V (30 Votes, 44.12%)

gen 1 (i mean, even if it had magnezone here i still wouldn't exactly be voting it here lol)
gen 2 (4 good mons, a surprisingly solid pick all things considered)
gen 3 (yes, objectively i know that i SHOULDN'T be picking it, but i did because i love all of these lines and solo mons)
gen 4 (a ton to like but they're not all winners in my eyes)
gen 5 (bisharp can't carry a generation alone)
gen 6 (keys, swords, and megas. this to me was a low point for steel in my eyes, though i did eventually warm to the idea of ones like mega mawile even if i was initially offended by the idea that they wouldn't even buff it beforehand (massive bruh moment that they just give mons that can't even hit 500bst with the transformation a mega to begin with))
gen 7 (sometimes i forget alolan sandshrew/sandslash even have steel. anyway damn that's an unhealthy number of legendaries lol. i mean i like most of them but i don't think i'd be comfortable picking it in a way)
gen 8 (i like the copperajah line... and that's pretty much it)
gen 9 (kingambit can't carry a generation alone (i get this is an unpopular opinion but i hope the others die in a fire blast))

I dont care if Aron is friend-shaped, Gen 5 takes this for me. I unironically love the doofus Poke that is "literally a set of gears." About the only one I dont care about from gen 5 is Cobalion, and that's apathy, not disdain.

i did nearly add something to say i didn't dislike the gears, i just didn't consider them high enough to really bring up as doing serious legwork to try salvaging the gen from the rest (am unfortunately a cobalion and also genesect and also ferrothorn line hater, and don't care for excadrill or escavalier much either)

I don't think I'm ready to vote yet. No one gen is really calling to me. Looking forward to hearing more people's thoughts.

This is tough to choose between IV and VIII for me. Empoleon, Lucario, Magnezone, and Dialga vs. G-Meowth line, Corviknight, H-Goodra, and Zamazenta. I think ultimately VIII takes this.

VIII > IV > VII > VI > III > V > IX > II > I

three of my top six favourite Pokemon are steel types in different gens, so it boils down to how good the Pokemon "supporting" them are.

and I think gen 3 just edges out the win.

I don't feel strongly about any of them, truth be told, but both Mawile and the Aron line are in that category of "I hope to use these Pokemon in the future". Hope that Mega Mawile is easy to get in Z-A ... Jirachi and Registeel are cool to look at which is enough for me.

9. Gen VIII (I've complained about Gen VIII in the past for feeling basic, and this round is no different. Looking at it overall, I think that's kind of the problem: Fighting and Steel are hard types to mess up, in my opinion. Yet Gen VIII's roster of Steel-types, while not BAD, is so uninspired. Hisuian Sliggoo/Goodra are two of the best here, and that's really not a good sign.)

8. Gen VII (I agree with whoever pointed out that this generation is all legendaries. It's too much without the common Pokemon to bolster it. Only Alolan Sandslash is kinda fun, anyway. Well, and Solgaleo is great in its own right.)

7. Gen I (Both Magnemite and Magneton are adorable, but it's really hard to choose Gen I when they're all it has to offer.)

6. Gen IV (The Bastiodon line, Bronzong line, and Wormadam form all suck. Dialga/Heatran are kinda generic, and Lucario/Empoleon/Magnezone can't make up for the lack of quality that first group brings.)

5. Gen IX (Nothing is BAD here, and Tinkaton, Revavroom, Archaludon and Gholdengo are solid, but nothing really takes a top spot among this roster for me.)

4. Gen II (Scizor and Skarmory are both awesome, and Steelix is a big step up from Onix. Just wish Forretress offered something different, typing-wise, from Scizor.)

3. Gen V (Genuinely nothing bad here, and Excadrill is a top tier Pokemon. Unfortunately, Excadrill is the only REALLY good Pokemon among this group, so Gen V doesn't stand out as much as others.)

2. Gen III (The only bad Pokemon here is Beldum, and Mawile/Aggron/Metagross are awesome, while Registeel is the coolest Regi. Solid effort here.)

1. Gen VI (All five megas are awesome, the Aegislash line is awesome, and Klefki is hilarious. Perfect set of Pokemon here.)

Gen VI. After that, it's Gen III, V, or IX. Generally a solid set of Pokemon, surprisingly.

This is the toughest one so far, probably my favourite type. Loved playing Steel deck in the online TCG.

Probably Gen 9. Tinkaton + Iron Treads + Kingambit is a strong trio, and there's some other good stuff too.

Ended up voting for Gen VI, I loved using Aegislash to bits in-game, nearly nobody could deal with King's Shield. Klefki is not my favorite but at least it's got a pretty unique typing and moveset. The Megas are mostly not offensive.

Oh and in a ROM hack I used Eviolite Doublade extensively.

Gen VII - Alolan Sandlash is cool and Kartana is one of the few good Ultra Beasts, but overall a very weak lineup.

Gen IV - Lucario, Magnezone, and a bunch of bad.

Gen I - Two solid Pokemon, but a very limited roster and Magnezone is better. Only putting it above IV because IV has so many bad Pokemon.

Gen VI - Aegislash is awesome and Mega Lucario is pretty cool, but I don't care for Klefki or the other Megas.

Gen II - A small group here but all of them are a least decent, with Scizor and Skarmory being better than decent.

Gen III - Also a small group, but Aggron and Megaross rule, and even Jirachi is pretty good.

Gen IX - Tinkaton, Orthworm, and Kingambit are great, and I like Gholdengo too. A really good lineup overall but the gens above it are stacked.

Gen VIII - Corviknight and Perrserker are fantastic and the elephants are really good. The legendaries are pretty solid too. The only dud is Stunfisk

Gen V - Bisharp is my favorite Steel type, so this gen gets an automatic boost from that, but Excadrill and Escavalier are top tier Steel types too. Genesect has a sweet design and I would like it a lot if it wasn't a Mythical. The seeds and gears are pretty funny and decent in their own right. Cobalion I don't really have any strong feelings about.

Also, while we're on the subject I need to make a complaint about Escavalier. Let's look at it's Pokedex entry for Pokemon Black:

They fly around at high speed, striking with their pointed spears. Even when in trouble, they face opponents bravely.

Speed: 20

wtf

i see a lot of clickbait titles rag on about this kind of stuff and it's pretty obvious by now that speed usually more defines reaction speeds for pokemon, and given that escavalier is... well, a karrablast awkwardly wielding shelmet's armour and some lances, it's understandable that even if it can travel fast it's probably not the most flexible thing around (i like to think that this is shelmet scamming karrablast personally, especially since they're enemies)
