A woman innocently started this trend because she had gone through multiple miscarriages, that it was legit cause for celebration that she ended up with one that lasted long enough for her to be able to learn the sex of the fetus (and indeed, she gave birth to a daughter who is still alive today). It was a simple, understated, and non-destructive little ceremony involving just showing a cake with appropriately-colored frosting.
