In the Amazon show Gandalf is sent from space to middle earth. I thought that was kinda cool.

Technically it's the opposite. The original idea of The Hobbit, and later LoTR, was that it happened in the distant mythical past. Tolkien wanted to make a new legend for Britain. Legends happen in the past. Middle Earth is supposed to be Earth but like in a very ancient forgotten era

Pretty accurate. I think Tolkien is quoted as saying that we would be living in the seventh age or something like that.
