I generally don't check reviews at all; I just know something interesting when I see it. It pretty much always works.

If I do feel like I need more info, I'm sure as hell not gonna waste my time with lengthy posts that just repeat "it sucks" in terms that they think are increasingly funny.

The only thing you need to understand to use critic reviews is that they use PR speak. If the game drove them mad grinding for months, they say "it got a little grindy in places." So naturally, when they say "some of the controls are a little awkward" you know you're going to be fighting controls the whole time.

My own personal opinion is what ultimately matters when it comes to a game, movie, or TV show. I need to watch something to know if it's good or not.

I certainly don't use, like, Metacritic as a bar for whether or not I'm going to watch/play something. That said, there are definitely signs that the reviews are more or less accurate. Anytime there's a massive discrepancy between the users and critics, the users are right like 99% of the time.

Reviews and recommendations can be good for games that might not be on your radar otherwise. Though it needs to come from someone whose tastes align pretty closely with yours, or can at least give you enough information to make a judgement whether something would be to your taste.

Metacritic is great for things that I am on the fence on or to call attention to something I was previously unaware of.

Of course my opinion is most important, but I can't play / watch everything

I like lengthy videos made by people who've spent a long time with the game and can talk in detail about the gameplay.

Other reviews all come off as insincere nowadays.

Completely agree. For games, unless you're a complete idiot you should be able to watch gameplay and see how the game plays. You can then look at some reviews just to check on things like length and bugs at launch. ACG is the only reviewer I need because his taste lines up with mine and he goes into a lot of detail about the games. For movies, unless a trailer is being completely deceptive, you can pretty easily judge if you'll like it or not. Then you can check some scores just to make sure it's not a complete flop with a good trailer.

I don't need reviews for movies since it's not a huge money or time investment, and if I'm interested in it, I'll know. For shows I just get recommendations from people I trust, and with games I like recommendations from trusted content creators and game play videos.
