What are some of the rarest enemies to spawn in games? I guess Pokemon shinies although I believe there's a charm now to make them a little more common.

Would be cool if there were some enemies that had specific conditions to spawn and even then there's still an RNG factor at the end.

I don't know if the later games carried the concept forward, but there were rare monsters in the Phantasy Star Online games. If you weren't specifically running quests with large numbers of the common variants, it would take weeks or months of playtime until you spotted one.

In Final Fantasy XI, a lot of "Notorious Monsters" would be a chance of spawning instead of one specific enemy in the zone (I.e. there are 6 flies in this area, one of the six is the placeholder and Valkurm Emperor may spawn in its place). But there's no guarantee people will be killing the placeholder to even give it a chance to spawn, so it might become incredibly rare to actually see.

Rare enemies but also rare moves and rare drops/steals.

In some games the missing rare enemy only pops up after the battle starts and then can run before you fell it. Metamorphoses also.

Seasons. Day/night cycle. Days of week.

Feebas in pokeymans Ruby and Sapphire. It had some absurd hidden rules governing when it would spawn involving invisible mechanics and even when you got it right, other pokeymans could still spawn in its place.

As an aside, to evolve it, you needed to max out its beauty stat, which was impossible if it had the wrong nature or something like that. So if you caught one that couldn't evolve, you'd have to catch another one or breed it (assuming it was female since there weren't wild ditto in the game).

First to come mind is the Time Lost Proto Drake from WoW Wrath of the Lich King. Think it spawned only once a week (or was is just several days). And since it dropped a mount it doesn't stay alive for long.

Some enemies in the Mega Man Battle Network games were infuriatingly rare.

V3 navis could often take a long time to find, but there were several that I looked for for MUCH longer. And the stupid thing was, you still had to get the right rank for the battle, which was often hard and even had an element of luck to it in addition. And in some cases, you could even get the rank you needed and still not get the chip. Like if there was more than one kind of enemy, or if you forgot and had something equipped where you would only get money.

A lot of people straight-up chip tradered a number of em in BN1. I was one of the rare few who actually got the drop-down chip without it.

Larva Eater from FF XII satisfies both: you have to kill 256 enemies while remaining the Great Crystal area before one spawns, then it can reappear again after beating another 30-255 enemies. I cherished the hell out of that dagger and built Ashe around using it; pretty sure either it or Vaan w/ Yagyu Darkblade got the killing blow on Yiazmat that playthrough.

Yeah I was going to come in to say phantasy star online also.

Rare enemies were way more valuable in the episode 1 and 2 gamecube and xbox ports, and for blue burst on the PC (you could also do this thing where you telepipe back to town and back to try to get rare enemies to spawn. You will wear the hell out of the gamecube's laser or whatever, but dammit you have to do what you have to do to get them sweet god/battles for you and the homies). In the dreamcast version the drop rate for the most valuable rare items was so jacked up that even if you came across the rare enemies you were more than likely to get a whole lot of nothing, lol.

Yeah, as much as I enjoyed FF12, it has some really absurd methods for obtaining the strongest weapons. Like if you messed up and opened the wrong chests, the only way you could get the Zodiac Spear was from a chest with a 0.1% chance of spawning. I spent several hours trying to get that damn chest to spawn on PS2. Why are you like this SE?

dark souls 1 actually had really good sound design.

this type of vagrant is likely to be way more rare than the crab version because the crabs spawn when people lose bloodstains with 5+ humanity and the orb ones spawn when you drop certain items.

the orb version is pretty common if you're in a high-traffic area where people gravelord. because once you hit 99 eyes of death you drop the rest and they are one of the items.

Also the pink tail had a far less than 1/64 drop rate. It was 1/256 but the way drop rates work in FF4 is first it checks to see if 1/32 drops. If it does then it stops dropping items. Then it repeats the process for 1/64, 1/128 and only then after failing those three checks does it get a chance to roll on the 1/256 drop table.

You fight five of them at a time though and sirens guarantee you encounter them so it actually wasn't that bad. Takes maybe 5-8 hours to get enough pink tails for your entire party.

i have done like two dozen ds1 playthroughs and i have only ever seen one vagrant. it was actually weirdly scary the one time it showed up too lol, walking around in an area i had been in who knows how many times and some glowing red thing suddenly just scurrying by

Yeah it was like one little section of a river and a few tiles there had a chance to spawn it and those tiles changed every day. I'm sure it's not the rarest encounter by far, even just within pokemon, but the rarity plus the specificity and obscurity made it a real pain in the ass to find.

Old gray brick had an easy rng exploit to encounter him but I could never get him to drop the seven sword.

It wasn't really worth it anyway.

It's also only on two tiles so you have to walk back and forth on just those two tiles.

I mostly played on a GBC where the RNG exploits didn't seem to work.

Never got the Seven Sword either. Not that I spent too much time trying; I killed a few of them then got sick of it.

It's by area which is why the peninsula of power is a thing. You're actually just fighting the monsters from the next continent over because when they drew the area for that continent it overlapped a little with the starting continent.

IIRC the specific way it worked was that there was one route with a river running through it (can't remember the specific number, it was the one that had the Weather Station in the middle). Feebas could spawn on six of those river tiles, which were randomized at the start of the game; you could talk to some NPC to reroll the randomization, but it's not an obvious thing (as in you wouldn't assume it had anything to do with Feebas unless you had a guide). It also only had a 50% spawn rate when you finally did find one of the six tiles, so you had to fish each tile in the river multiple times to be sure it wasn't there.

I finally caught one after hours of painstaking searching, and every single Feebas / Milotic I ever 'caught' for my Pokedex up through Gen 6 was bred from that original one. I was never gonna jump through hoops to catch another Feebas.

this isn't every ffxi player's experience, but skirmish pephredo. it took my salvage group 9 months at 6 runs per week to get it to show up for the first time.

i got the drop on the first one. then we went back the next week and got 5 more drops x_x.

Not the rarest, but Master Tonberry in FFVII in the Northern Crater. If morphed and you got lucky he would turn into a ribbon. I got a ribbon for every single character in my party. Took fucking forever!!!!!

I brought up dreamcast phantasy star online's rare enemy drop rates earlier, but to truly understand how hopeless it is to find the game's best rares legit you have to actually see the numbers.

Now in episode 1 and 2 sega actually did make finding these kind of rares reasonable. The best way to get one in EP 1 and 2 was via the redria section ID fighting the rare slime enemies. 1/22 chances for them. (And the rare slimes was the easiest rare enemies to get spawn since all you had to do was intentionally split up the regular slimes with the ice tech).

Droprate in dreamcast PSO:
Pouifully Slime: 1/1194959
Chaos Bringer: 1/595782

You only ever fought like, 5 or so chaos bringers (the centaur dudes) in any given ruins rune. The slime enemies was not that much better even if you intentionally split them, lol.

I have played dreamcast PSO for over 1,500 hours and I bull-shit you not the rarest item I ever found without taking a copy from some players with a gameshark/code breaker was the blue double saber. Dreamcast PSO was just busted, lol.
