Thats awesome, do you know if there was anything in particular you said that got her to watch it? Im trying to get my own mom to check it out.

Both my parents are huge fans of Justified, so Goggins did most of heavy lifting there. The soundtrack and retro aesthetics did the rest, she's a sucker for 50's Americana and classic movies.

I watched the first two eps on my own, and was confident enough that they'd like it if they gave it a chance; so I just asked that they give it a shot with the first two eps, then give me their honestly opinions on whether or not they wanted to stick with it. My mom was the most interested in sticking with it; my dad's got too much of that underlying father-knows-best pride to admit to liking anything that I recommend, lol. Thankfully it ended up being one of those shows that only got better as the season went on, so by the end she really enjoyed it and is looking forward to S2.

They also admitted that it helped that I was there to explain certain facets of the lore to them out of the gate. Having seen the entire season I can see why the showrunners told / revealed things the way they did, but imo the first ep's still a little bit shaky in onboarding people who are new to the franchise.

Oh shoot, now that you mention it Im pretty sure she was really into Justified as well. Ill have to make sure she knows hes in it.

Probably the biggest hurdle in the first episode is the jarring cut from the day of the Apocalypse to a day in Vault life, without really explaining to the viewer what a Vault is. If you can find the particular trailer that starts off with that snippet of Cooper's black and white TV ad for Vault-Tec, I think it'd be beneficial to play just that part of the trailer prior to starting the first ep; otherwise, just briefly explain what the Vaults are to them (though I'd leave out the fact that they're secretly horrible science / social experiments, since that did end up being a focus of the show, and they did quite a good job of slowing peeling back that mystery for newcomers).

It also couldn't hurt to explain to them what a Ghoul is, aka people mutated by radiation who live a really long time as a result.

Funnily enough, one of the first things my dad pointed out was 'why are there still new soda bottles 200 years after the apocalypse?" In that case don't be afraid to blame it on Bethesda for not thinking things through, lol (or you could just write it and all the other silliness off as 'campy space-age humor, aka what your dad / granddad thought the future would be like').

Still, having said all that, they'll probably figure things out just fine on their own. Just do your best to convince them to stick with it through the 2nd episode and then decide how they feel about it.

I am thoroughly impressed by the acting skills of Walter Goggins. If he is not a method actor I dont know who is.

Everything else in the first episode seems like fan pandering but true to the Fallout game for sure.

Its funnier to think method acting as in standing in a huge amount of radiation to become a ghoul

I'm already on my rewatch of this series. It's just so fun to experience the Fallout universe as a TV show

That is something I wish they would have at least touched on. I don't remember the specifics, but I got the impression ghouls were made from experimentation/drug cocktails, but the last episode made it seem like it was to do with the nukes.

Again, never played or really know much at all about the games. Doesn't change anything not knowing, but Mama Ghoul kinda made me go 'wait, how?'

Yeah, I don't know how I feel about the whole 'ghouls need specific drugs to keep from going feral' thing that the show adds to the lore. It could've been something specific to Cooper's character (since it also clearly affects his breathing), but the ghoul he killed and ate was asking for a hit of it as well when he was showing signs of madness. Plus the drug is clearly a known and valued commodity if the organ harvesters kept such a large stock of it.

It might be a new contrivance on Bethesda's part to help cope with the fact that the further these games get from the day the bombs dropped, the less plausible it is that there are still pre-war ghouls who haven't yet gone feral (since the game lore occasionally hints at the fact that they need a particularly strong willpower and / or a goal to focus on to keep that from happening).

Outside the drugs he was probably taunting Lucy about becoming a ghouls considering how much radiation is probably required for that.

I hope season 2 has an episode with Cazadors and they make them almost as terrifying as I'm sure they'll try to make the inevitable Deathclaw scene. I was actually even more terrified of them than any other enemy type in NV lol

The whole super mutant thing (or lack of) still bugs me. The line where some person sees The Ghoul and asks "is that a mutant?" makes it seem they had no clue what a mutant is.

Super Mutants were being made all over America, not just in California. Even in Fallout 4, I think it was implied that Super Mutants were still being made

probably expensive to get right and a big bitching point in the fanbase if they fucked it up. now that they know the show won't crash and burn I hope they put some more cash and talent into season 2

Episode 2 review: Great stuff. I was wondering when the Ink Spots would show up. Filly looked very familiar from Fallout 4? When you go to look up the detective ghoul (or was that a robot?) Am I even thinking of the right game?

I am also astounded by the years its been since I have played a fallout game. Really great characters so far. Nobody I dont like

My friend and I were actually debating on whether Filly looked more like Megaton (FO3) or Diamond City (FO4) which is what you're thinking of
And you're thinking of Nick Valentine from FO4, he's a Synth.
