I've done this style of poll contest once before, back in either Gen VII or Gen VIII, so why not try it again now? The rules are simple: each day, I'm going to post a poll for a given Pokemon typing, with each generation's roster of new Pokemon filling in that typing. You just need to look at what each generation had to offer, and select which generation you think brought the best new roster (for any reason; you could say that a single Pokemon was so good that it overwhelms everything else the generation spawned, or you could select a generation that may be more well-rounded that the one that created your personal favorite). At the end of the day, one generation will be crowned a champion (with potential tiebreakers if need be), and that generation will advance to a second round, where the eighteen winners, and fourteen strongest runner-ups will be sorted into a 32-entrant tournament to crown which generation produced the best overall roster of a single typing.

The tournament has now begun. The discussion topic is here: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/8-gamefaqs-contests/80744044 and the bracket is here: https://www.bracketmaker.com/tlist.cfm?tid=478370

Yesterday's match didn't quite reach the same votals as day one, but it still saw a similar blowout, as Gen IV's Fighting roster nearly doubled Gen I's Rock-types (with Kabuto/Kabutops missing from the poll >_>). For the third day in a row today, Gen IV is on deck, this time with its Ice-type roster (the only Ice-types to make the contest) facing a plethora of Mega Evolutions from Gen VI, in addition to a handful of newbies. Will the Megas prove too much to overcome, or will Gen IV earn its higher seed?

Even without the few good Megas, VI's Dragons win. Tyrunt line is one of the best Dragons in the series, goofy Goomy line is cool, Zygarde is one of my favorite legendaries, Noibat is adorable, and Dragalge is neat. Noivern is my least favorite of the bunch, but it's still decent enough.

Both solid, I think the sheer number of good things in Gen 6 make up for the shitty Latis and their unbelievably boring megas. Plus most of the other megas aren't bad by the low standards megas have, and Tyrunt is adorable.

Voted gen I've ice almost solely for mamoswine

Has there ever been an evolution introduced generations later that was nearly that well done?

Weavile. From the same generation. >_>

Also, Annihilape, eight generations after the fact.

I like Mamoswine well enough on its own merits, but I honestly don't think it flows that well as a natural Piloswine evo. It just looks like it has a much different design philosophy behind it than the first two forms.

I think Mamoswine flows well from Swinub. It's just that Piloswine is kinda bad.

I'm a big Mega Pokemon apologist, but I feel stronger about the ice types here!

Annihilape is great though

gen 4 has peak designs in this regard tbh

not the fault of the likes of honchkrow, yanmega and porygon-z arguably that gamefreak decided to dunk on their viability afterwards (i'd throw in ones like gallade and froslass here too but i dunno if the criteria here counts them, and i'm a big fan of others like magnezone and togekiss but i get they kinda go a different direction from the original intent)

i think magmortar is the only gen 4 evolution of a previous gen pokemon that i outright dislike, and i don't really know how they would have made it better (design wise) anyway, cuz it fits magmar well.

Budew and Roserade really uplifted the incredibly forgettable Roselia too. Would really be cool if a future game did both at once to a forgettable one-stager from a later gen but it seems theyve stopped with cross-gen prevos.

ursaluna and annihilape make me frustrated at how they undo the original appeal of the lines so i refuse to count them (kingambit is fair enough though, even if it was also overtuned and highly unnecessary, there's no denying it was a welcome concept that served as a natural extension)
