It could get struck down for violating First Amendment rights for adults like COPA did.

Theyve tried a half dozen of these SOPA think of the children bills since the 2000s. This is just the closest.

I mentioned before that I've seen people believe one of the purposes of this bill is to eliminate pro-Palestine speech online.

Could KOSA be struck down as unconstitutional for limiting the First Amendment rights of adults like COPA was: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashcroft_v._American_Civil_Liberties_Union ?

It's a fuck-ton harder to get a law flipped after it's passed than stopping it before it is signed into law.

And, in the meantime, you'll have to deal with the fallout from early implementation of the law while people scrabble to be in compliance. Those effects may be too devastating to undo, even if the law gets wiped from the books.

It's like how voter maps are still being used almost a decade after being declared unconstitutional because Republicans and SCOTUS are running the clock to make sure certain maps stay in play for the election and then going, "Oh, that was bad. Let's fix that now that we've cemented out power."

Damage already done.

Wtf, man these fucking old people who barely even understand what the Internet is need to knock it off.

People who can't print a pdf, making 6x what their staffers who are printing the pdfs make, are making decisions that will end global commerce and communication.

Tech literacy training should be part of any professional training these days. Doubly so for people like this. The Squad should be running mandatory seminars that, I don't know, explain the basics how the internet functions (and not at a technical level).

I'm just so numb to this shit at this point.

I don't support this, because it's dumb. I can see a point in wanting to curb foreign influencers before an election - but it's just a stupid way of going about it.

Want to regulate the Internet for the better _and_ curb propaganda? You need to do something about tracking and targeted ads.

Nah I usually am numb but this time its different. Wish I hadn't even looked into this.

It really does sound like it has a great chance of becoming law. This sounds like the worst thing that could ever happen to the internet in the US. The total end of the internet we knew.

It already pisses me off when Twitter harasses me every other time I load on to confirm my phone number. To input my actual drivers license and have some government agency tracking basically everything I look at? Absolutely FUCK that.

I would also assume this would just encourage them to pus hto make VPNs illegal too if that isn't already in the bill.

From my perspective, with how relentless and intense the US Government antagonizes the Internet with bills like this ... a really bad one passing was inevitable. That's why I'm numb. The internet has always been a dead man walking on borrowed time.

Society relying on it so heavily was always a mistake.

Even it doesn't pass, the next might, or the one after that.

The only way to "save the internet" is to reform the US political system... and that isn't going to happen any time soon.

Maybe related, but my youtube favorites got nuked a few days ago because apparently one video on there (out of like a thousand+) violated the youtube child content policy or some shit. When asked which video it was, that I didn't upload so that I could click one button and remove it, I got the usual "We investigated and uphold our decision rip your playlist created over multiple years anyway"

It was probably some random ass anime clip because believe it or not I don't look up illegal shit on my account tied to my main personal email. So I'm definitely looking forward to more overreactions after kosa becomes a thing but even worse

There'll be a great exodus of websites out of the US, 99% of websites still in the US will be blocked by the EU for violating their privacy laws, VPN use in the US will increase by 1500%, and every small website that allows user-uploaded images in the US will have to close their site because they don't have resources to comply with the law.
So say goodbye to the small hobby sites and message boards for RC planes, DIY home renovation, amateur nature photography, homebrew Atari games, fan comics, etc.

Wait until they criminalize VPNs. That is an inevitability once this passes.

The first time I heard about a data breach involving any social media company, I would be 100% behind a lawsuit against the government for codifying this into law. If they don't know how to properly secure our info and still want more of it by passing laws like this, it's on them when lives are ruined.
