To be fair, I don't recognize the user and I can't think of any other active posts they have, so there's a considerable chance that the TC being banhammered is unrelated to the topic being closed.

i was about to post in the Live Nation/Ticketmaster topic that I think treating politics like team sports is the thing thats really banned, but apparently I was wrong because that topic was deleted. It wasnt even really political (at least not inherently, Im sure people could have made a political discussion out of it but you could say that about anything)

They definitely want people to leave this site, the userbase as a whole is at least 3x the age they are treating us right now

*30 year old weirdo, thank you

Also why would I post on Reddit? The whole point of the site is a weird game to get as many upvotes as you can, there's no point in remembering the names of anyone, they might as well not even be real people, and the site itself breaks if you have a conversation for more than 10 replies. If you're having a normal conversation with someone, you don't just get downvotes and then silence for saying something stupid/controversial. It feels bad. Imagine talking to your friends, and out of nowhere you say something, they all just stare at you silently, give you a. No, they reply to you like a normal interaction.

But now this place has become North Korea, so idk. Oops, a political post...
I don't know why people try and characterize reddit this way. Its not 100% wrong if you're trying to go to some cesspool like r/gaming looking for a genuine sense of community but that's obviously the wrong way to use the site. Reddit is often very useful if you're looking for information about stuff and if you want a community then small subs function normally.

At no point have I ever even considered reading Reddit's front page. If I'm on Reddit, it's for a specific sub, not a broad overview of the site. The site as a whole is just too big for a broad overview.

This is more or less what I always say to people who complain that Reddit is terrible.

Obviously, if you're going to the front page, letting the site show you random "hot topics", or otherwise not curating your experience at all it's going to be 100% crap.

But if you actively seek out specific subreddits, you can find a ton of them that are either relatively tame or outright polite, where people have interesting and civil conversations, with minimal shitposting and trolling.

There are definitely subreddits that enforce draconian levels of groupthink or that downvote the hell out of anything resembling individual thought, and there are definitely subreddits that are like an overflowing river of digital diarrhea, but you can find a lot of great communities if you look hard enough.

Reddit's honestly one of the better social media sites right now, as long as you use it right.

Oh, I still dislike the site for being a horrible format. Its fundamental design means that threads don't flow like public discussions where people add to the conversation of posts that have come before. They instead end up fragmented into a bunch of sub-discussions (which themselves get fragmented into a bunch of sub-discussions) such that it's largely impossible to follow any single conversational flow. It's like being at a party and bouncing between groups that are talking about different things, except those different things are all actually pretty similar and belong to a single overarching topic but nobody can seem to get together and have the discussions as a larger group so everyone hears everything.

But all the "eww it's an echo chamber" critiques are indeed more a matter of trying to jump into the larger circle jerks. You can find perfectly civil, helpful discussion if you stick to smaller communities that you select on that basis.

Overall, the main feedback weve received is that the decision to lock the Current Events board and generally prohibit explicitly political topics elsewhere is unpopular amongst a large percentage of commenters. I dont want to duck or run from that takeaway - this is something Fandom discussed and anticipated before making these changes. Ultimately, we will be standing by this decision because doing so aligns with how we operate other parts of our platform, and how we want GameFAQs to be positioned in broad gaming discourse.

Admin came out and admitted feedback's useless. Shocking!

Honestly, I'm expecting this won't even change that much for most social boards in the long run, gradual death of CE aside. For the first few weeks there'll be efforts to close "political" topics, and particularly butthurt posters may be able to get rid of posts/topics they don't like by marking them as political, but long-term I doubt it'll be worth mods' time to actively police boards where nobody has any problems and stamp out political discussions and we can probably just keep posting as normal. It certainly wouldn't be the first time that official policies don't exactly amount to much (like committing to removing problematic ads), and while I expect there'll be a concerted effort to keep up appearances in the early days, I doubt it'll last.

That is what I figure. It seems like some corporate wide policy that is being foolishly applied to Gamefaqs. It may make sense on some of thier wikias and the like, but on Gamefaqs social boards, it doesn't make much sense. Especially, since I feel like at this point, since the user base has dwindled to just the most die hard, trolling and flaming are just much less of a thing (at least to the extreme ends), so there is much less need to manage the discussion compared to something a little bigger that could easily get out of hand. We are just one big happy family here :)

Let's be honest, "We know this is unpopular, but we're going to do it anyway and just ignore all negative feedback until you all lose interest" has been official GameFAQs policy for like 20 years now.

Nearly every major change was followed by people pointing out why it was a terrible idea and how much they hated it, with the official response generally being "Suck it up or fuck off, we don't care."

Nearly every major change
raising the karma limit on CE (which people on CE were largely supportive of), mentions, youtube/twitter/imgur/etc embedding, the shift to https, an actual fucking functioning profanity filter instead of having to asterisk yourself out in specific ways, the optional multi-paged FAQ format (it doesn't work everywhere, but it's way better for some guide writers and types of guides), block feature, flairs and flair filtering, better quoting, signatures changed to being live (I got a sigwipe back in the day because they changed the rules and then deleted years of old posts...), and probably some more stuff are all things that happened under sballen in the past decade or so that are just straight up good things. since he's stepped down a year ago, literally all that has happened is the removal of the politics board and now this shit

the only thing I can remember that got massive backlash and is still poorly received is the revamped moderation system (doesn't affect me, but it's still dumb to not have multiple eyes look over a moderation). sballen admits he could have done more (especially more contests dude) but he did listen to feedback and implement ideas or rollback changes based on it

meanwhile I suspect fandom's trying to ship of theseus us into a primarily younger, more monetizable demographic because they just don't like gamefaqs like users do

Are people really that mad about the changes themselves or is it more the perception of new ownership trying to meddle in something that isn't really "theirs"? None of it seems that bad to me, other than the fact they should've quarantined the politics board to begin with instead of doing it to CE, though I can't deny that's a big change.

I just think if the site was still run by an "insider" and still had 10k active board users at a given time and similar changes were made, the reaction would be a lot different, but now everyone is just seeing it as doom and gloom
Yes people are mad about CE being set to private and many of their community boards being effectively killed. CE is now being slowly suffocated like LUE and the admins are pretending that's not the goal. They also said it was our fault essentially for being too toxic for Fandom or whatever. It's not just site changes, they're simultaneously telling us we don't belong here while acting like they haven't done anything to harm us.

the worst part is, the people who were behind all the harassment, doxxing, and death threats that got the politics board shut down and now CE privated (it's a tiny subreddit of disgruntled users mad at mods about being banned) got exactly what they wanted. they were literally aiming for this outcome from the beginning

And, of course, there will be the major question (thus far unanswered by the powers that be) of what, specifically, constitutes "political" (and, therefore, banned) discussion?

If Justin Trudeau comes to my home town and I write about it, is that political? If there's a protest against him and I write about that without editorializing, is that political? If there's a mass shooting and we write about that, is that political? If no, what happens when people start discussing the causes and the discussion drifts (as it invariably will) to gun laws and mental health treatment, where is the line where it becomes political? If the latest Marvel movie comes out and a historically white character is cast as a person of colour, is posting news of that political? Is discussing it political? If there's a protest that draws a police response, is posting support/condemnation of the police actions political?

This is one of the many, many reasons why this move is so dumb. "Politics" is this massive, roiling grey area that is ill-defined, with no clear boundaries. If you tasked me with banning "political" speech on a forum like this, I would respond that unless you key in your definition a lot more tightly, a ban of that nature is borderline unenforceable.
