My guess is people are just deathly afraid of being caught dead with a station wagon so they buy "totally not a station wagon" vehicles that are literally just station wagons. Like Hatchbacks and SUVs. Sure, they aren't technically station wagons. generally, the seats fold down so you're able to store and carry things ~6' long things no problem. It's something you can't do in a sedan with a conventional trunk. I also don't have general access to a midsize SUV or a truck (aka, great for city life).

More versatile space. Sometimes the volume is not all a major gain because of the roofline

They typically look better (hatchback civic, Corrola etc) and have more wiggle room for storage and transport. Sometimes they even perform better as well.

Idk, never seems like they'd have enough space to be actually useful.
