That 360/PS3 era felt like we had 2 good games over the span of like 7 years.

Nowadays we get like 5 killer games in 2 months.

They never left. It's more that companies killed some major franchises. We are lucky the people who made those games still care and try to make spiritual successors. Hopefully Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is good, and then next year Armed Fantasia and Penny Blood are good. Sucks that Suikoden, wild arms and Shadow Hearts are gone for good.

They never left.

Even during the console gen some fans complained about the most (360 and PS3's) while the genre did struggle a bit on the major consoles because the smaller JP companies couldn't keep up with budgets during the HD transition they instead migrated most of these games over to portables instead. Shin megami tensei 4, monster hunter 3 portable/monster hunter 4, dragon quest 9, etc. DS and psp (which the wii getting a occasional release) kept the genre trucking along during that era.

Also there is always some sort of rpg releasing on the PS5 (that also shares releases with the PS4 if its one of those PS4 and switch only releases) and the switch to the point I'm having a hard time keeping up, lol. Like a dragon infinite wealth releases like a week away from granblue fantasy relink and persona 3 reload...these two games was a single day from one another, then at the end of february month FF7 rebirth releases. Whoops, here comes unicorn overlord and dragon's dogma 2, and right around the corner eiyuden chronicles is dropping. During the fall of last year you had another sword art online jrpg coming out that I am sure just flew right past dude's heads.

Eh

The term RPG has gotten so broad that there's no good way to answer the question.

Sure, there are plenty of JRPGs, just look at Resident Evil 4 Remake and whatever Sonic game they made last year.

IDK what people mean by "they are back!"

FFVII Rebirth is great, but it's a cut of its own genre being more of an action RPG made in Japan.

Are we talking about remaster like Star Ocean or Final Fantasy Pixel remaster? Great for nostalgia, but Im trying to get into Star Ocean and it just feels so archaic.

I would like more remaster like Xenogears, but what new JRPG's are out there? I dislike Persona, and I keep hearing people complain that Unicorn Overlord is too easy, which is a big detractor for me and Tactical RPGs.

What are these new crown jewels I'm snoozing on? I would like to get immersed in a new JRPG.

A little game called Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes comes out next week. It is buy the people who made Suikoden, making the game on their own because Konami sucks. Hopefully it's good.
