No, they didn't. That's the problem. There is no indication anywhere that hornyposting is against the rules (and I have asked multiple times for a citation of such a rule), but for some reason some mods are on a rampage deleting anything vaguely suggestive.

They didn't update the rules page but they have talked about it in forums. Unfortunately the things they talked about are "this is an example of hornyposting"

There has not been a single statement from the admins saying that hornyposting is against the rules. Only that it's something to be "addressed". And the few statements we've gotten from mods on the subject are vague and even contradictory. They don't know anymore than we do.

It's going to happen before long. They'll keep the older moderators on a bit longer, but it won't be long Fandom will announce they're getting rid of newer moderators first, replacing them with Fandom approved moderation staff.

The concept of folks volunteering to police a forum that they are not in any way a part of is outrageous to me. I cannot even comprehend what type of person would do this. They're obviously not going to be paid staff, as that would be even more absurd of Fandom.

It happens all the time, especially places like reddit. There are people that just like to collect mod positions and try to bend communities to their will. I've seen shit like "hey, I've never posted here but I'm a mod now, and here's a list of the changes I'm making."

If that's the route they choose, so be it. There likely wouldn't be any argument they'd hear at that point that would change their mind. Until then, I will do my extremely tiny part in maintaining the community we've built for the last two decades.

I get what you're saying but look at the history of the company. Closures are always announced in surprise. Wikias that were shut down got an 8-10 day warning. 261 got nothing. Changes are never made in cooperation with the community. They are decided behind closed doors, enacted with little to no warning, and then nobody has any power to object.

That's why I said for what it's worth. To the userbase right now, it's probably worth nothing. And that's understandable. Nothing is guaranteed.

I was laid off from a job once, small manufacturing company where the owner packed up and moved all production to Mexico. He gave us employees no reason to believe that was his endgame.

The problem is that the rules are technically there... it's the TOS. It's just that they're horribly, arbitrarily misinterpreted all the time. Making them rather irrelevant.

Would these mods be better at handling disputes specifically as they relate to flamingo biology? Because you've got a serious problem with that.

Sounds like maybe their advertisers should be told that ads are being put up against horny content. Since fandom is so concerned about this community and that topic, the least we could do is respond in kind by making sure every piece of horny content across fandom's properties gets reported to the ad agencies so we can help them clean up their sites the way they want.

Any idea which ad agencies advertise on there exactly?

Seems like an awful thing to do.

I've been here since the site launched, made an account a good bit later though, and I have to say this seems like a clown show to the point I'm considering moving on. This site was already kinda on life support but I loved it anyway, the one thing I can't understand is giving one of the most popular boards a hotshot of cyanide through privating it and complete failure of communication on an epic scale.

If they want the site dead they should admit it and move on. If they want to grow the site there's at least five better ways to handle it I can think of off the top of my head. There's also better ways to handle bringing it in a new direction.

Whatever though, at the end of the day it isn't my problem. I don't even care about horny posting, but I have seen entire communities die because of vague and difficult to interpret rule sets and horrible mismanagement multiple times, and the writing is definitely on the wall for it to start here. Not a deathknell by any means, but steering towards one. I don't think I'll stick around to see another one of my favorite corners of the net meet that fate again.

It has now been a full day since I asked this question on Ask the Mods, and we're still no closer to an answer.

We have asked that clearer guidelines be published, both for userbase reference as well as ours. I don't know when that's coming. I tried to provide a generalized guideline in a previous topic which basically amounted to don't objectify individuals. I think there is a level of moderator discretion that will come into play, and I wouldn't expect a detailed breakdown of each and every possible infraction. It will be a learning curve for us all and direction has been given to provide some leniency as this is navigated.

Even prior to this there were rules I had to enforce that I didn't necessarily agree with. Comes with the role. But being in this position allowed me to advocate for change, and we're at a point now where that's probably more important than ever. That is why I stayed.

Figure all this shit out first, THEN establish it as an actual rule and start modding people for it (or preferably don't, because it's draconian and completely out of line with what's considered acceptable by most of the internet). This is utter chaos as it is now.
