Amusingly, this extends to the spider-like Nerubian race which are replaced with the lobster-like makrura.

And I'll be honest, a celing full of crabs hanging on webs is more unsettling to me than the spiders.

I only ever touched one Skyrim mod and that was a player-owned housing mod before Hearthwhatever came out and it was a million times more interesting than the official DLC.

I don't remember *all* the details any more, but from what I remember, the property was built on a river and you had to do some miniquests and collect resources to build it out. Most or all of it was outdoors so you didn't have to go through a loading screen and you could enjoy nature. And there were scripted random events where people would come to visit you, sometimes to trade, sometimes to try to turn you into a vampire.

The first time I saw this was System Shock 2. People talked about how scary the spiders were, and there was a mod to remove them. I hate bugs, and I was always a giant coward when it came to any remotely scary game. System Shock 2 kept me constantly on edge with the normal enemies, and I was just always dreading the moment a spider would show up. Is it going to be a massive swarm of tiny enemies that are impossible to escape? A giant, hallway filling monster? Then I finally saw one.

And my only reaction was "oh." That's kinda big, I guess. They're really slow and don't really do much. Some are pretty bullet spongy. The spiders in Turok 2 scared me way more.

They're real, but I partially agree that these modes feel more like a trendy meme than a real accessibility option. Making them crabs instead of pretty much anything else feels like wasted effort. You ever see that photo of the coconut crab on the garbage can? It's practically a giant spider.

i didn't say it created it, i said it exacerbates it. to me, a fear of spiders is rational, to a degree. i mean, no one wants to get bitten, stung, etc, and injected with venom. that's an evolutionary thing. i think people just tend to blow it out of proportion. kill it with fire, burn the house down, etc. and then when it reaches the point where people can't even bear to witness the digital facsimile of a spider on their screen, it's just a little ridiculous to me. like people would rather flip shit and play into some kind of spider fear meme (the actual scientific definition) instead of just educate themselves about spiders

i'm not confused, i'm not convinced it's truly something they can't help. if more people cared to learn- and therefore teach their children- about "scary" but important parts of nature like spiders, i have a sneaking suspicion arachnophobia wouldn't be so common in the future
