Fates is like the lowest bar. It's like if you took the ending to mass effect 3 and made a whole game out of it. Pong has a better story than Fates.

Honestly the whole premise of Engage was a tough sell for me. It just looked like an excuse to shill the various lords of the game. Then people started comparing the story quality to Fates which... did not inspire confidence.

The gameplay is apparently on point, but I feel like Three Houses spoiled me on what I expect from a story.

The gameplay was excellent. The story is just very Saturday morning cartoon. I did my fair share of eye-rolling through it but it definitely didn't get in my way of enjoying the game itself.

Engage's story was pretty bland and forgettable. Fates may not have good writting, but it at least had some memorable moments.

Also Engage had a problem where it just kind of dragged on the story near the end and I know I lost a lot of drive to finish the game at one point.

Engage is my third favorite FE game. Love it to death.

Edit: Ive stopped watching Mangs years ago since that scandal. I dont give a damn about what he thinks.

Engage was just a shot at being the Monster Hunter Generations of Fire Emblem games. It just didn't work out as well.

The story is a dumpster fire, but the gameplay is def some of the best in modern FE titles.

I agree with this. Engage is my #3 as well and it's almost entirely for the incredible gameplay. I will say though, Engage has a few moments where the integration of gameplay and story together (in particular, chapter 11's desperate escape sequence and chapter 22 when you need to retrieve and purify all of the rings) really shines and makes the gameplay even better.

Oh god no, Engage ch22 is straight up ass on higher difficulties, legitimately one of the worst maps in the franchise. Just a big brawl routing Engage late game enemies and nearly all the actually useful Emblems are on the back half of the map, and you have to rout while dealing with reinforcements.

Engage tries hard to bait players into playing Heroes, the bond ring system is a psychological warmup for rolling gachas and the game has a number of tie-ins with Heroes to get bonus stuff, not to mention the game advertising its dlc before it even came out.

I'm going to disagree and say that I liked that chapter. The whole "just a big brawl" aspect with the simplicity of little to no emblem ring usage after being accustomed to them for so long felt like a challenge, but not an extremely annoying one IMO. Plus, it helps really sell the desperate situation your characters are in at that point in the story, hence why I praised it under the context of gameplay and story integration. Then again, I've never played the game on Maddening (Hard is more than enough for me) so maybe it really is that bad and unbalanced on the highest difficulty and I just don't know it.

For what it's worth, a huge chunk of the FE community refuses to engage with Mangs in any way. I know a lot of bigger FE creators reasonably well, and a ton of them refuse to engage with Mangs at all.

It's one of those unspoken rules of the whole community. There are a lot of great FE people out there, just...not him.

Fuga's Wild Ride if you're talking about hated Fates maps. The kitsune map also sucks.

Awakening is pretty forgettable map wise. Though that world tree map or whatever is an annoying mission in lunatic.

Ya know, I never knew all this stuff about Mangs. Then again, I've never followed him or anything, but I watch a lot of his Advanced Wars videos since they pop up in my feed.

If you imagine for a moment how bad the map could possibly be on Maddening, the reality is probably even worse lmao
Frankly, everything beyond Chapter 17 on Maddening just takes a nosedive straight into bullshit land
