All because I knew her name smh

For some context, in my job we get our schedules on an app and on the app you can see the names of everyone who are expected to show up for every shift. Yesterday I looked at the schedule to see who was going to show up for that day and saw a name that I didn't recognize. When I showed up I saw someone who I never seen before so I put two and two together and assumed the name I didn't recognized was her. On the start of every shift there's sheets of paper with the names of everyone who is supposed to be there and what they're assigned to do for the day. Me and her were just looking at the paper just to see where we're going to be assigned, I found my name and was about to head where I needed to go but I noticed that this girl was taking a while to find her name just murmuring to herself that she couldn't find her name. I quickly glanced again at the paper until I found the name that I didn't recognize and told her "is that your name?" and she turned around with the most scared reaction I've seen someone make. She just told me "Who are you and how do you know my name?" I calmly told her my name and quickly tried to explain that I saw a name on the app I didn't recognize and since I never seen you before that I just assumed that was your name. She slowly just backed away from me while having that same scared expression on her face.

I didn't witness this myself but according to a different coworker she told me that anytime I went past her throughout the shift she would stop what she was doing just to stare at me until I was out of her presence just looking like a deer looking at headlights... there's no way I scared this girl that much just because of some sort of misunderstanding. Do I have to be consciously aware of her just to avoid her at work at all times now? I don't want to make anyone uncomfortable but I don't want to alter my paths at work and take long scenic routes just to avoid this person either >_>

I'm sure she'll be fine. Though according to a different coworker, she was acting funny with them all shift long.

I would immediately tell your supervisor what happened, giving them your same pattern of logic you followed to reach the conclusion that was her and your interaction.

That way should she cause you any trouble, your boss will know ahead of time. You don't want her to be the first one to say something and get you in trouble.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

Or I don't even know if I would have that reaction. When you enter a job, you give them your name. I would expect there to be people who knew my name ahead of time. My job has me go to different locations from year to year, and when entering a new place I have definitely had people come up and go, "Hi, are you (my name)?" then introduce themselves. Seems totally normal to me.

Her reaction is NOT normal. From what you said, it sounds like more of a her thing. But sometimes people put off creepy vibes without knowing it.

Definitely a good idea to talk to a supervisor in case she reports something. And from now on, with this woman, just do whatever the minimum amount of interaction is required for work. Be cordial, but don't do anything else. Definitely don't try to smooth things out by apologizing or explaining over and over again.

Same kinda thing happened to me once. Pretty close to exactly the same.
I worked in a large office where we all had cubicles and our names were on the outside of the cubicles.
So a group of new people started and one girl sat right next to my good friend there and I noticed she had the same last name as my daughters teacher so the name stuck with me.

then a little bit later she came up to me and started talking to me because she said she saw me at a store (I never saw her) and I was like your name its ****** ********** right? Are you related to ******?
and then after that she started telling everyone I was her stalker and I followed her and I was dangerous and such. I learned this from my friend that sat next to her because shed say it loud to everyone around her whenever Id walk in the building.
It sucked. I did go to management, but then so did she. They told her to stop saying that stuff, but she never did. They asked her to stop numerous times. She never did. So a number of people at that place always thought I was s bad and scary person all because I saw her last name on the outside of her cubicle.

Damn, yeah it's definitely her and not you. I've met girls who got creeped out by me over nothing, and usually I find out much later they have maturity issues, so it's not something I sweat about when it happens anymore.

But yeah I'm a manager at my job. So when I have a new hire on my team, it's not uncommon for me to introduce myself by saying "You must be [name I saw on schedule]."

You're fine, TC. I suppose it couldn't hurt to let your managers know what happened ahead of time, as other users have said.

It could be that she has past trauma that she's dealing with that has made her defensive around new situations. You didn't do anything wrong but if there's a higher up that you can trust to be discreet and not start something, you might want to take the advice from the previous comment about alerting someone higher up to what occurred if only to CYA.

I'm surprised she didn't get fired after she continued to tell people that. That's a potentially big headache for HR in the future.

Reporting her is smart but also, just keep being yourself.
Most of us recognize that as friendly behavior. I'm usually one to try to introduce myself to new coworkers. We've all been new at some point, so someone like yourself is such a gift to make the environment more comfortable.

I'm currently with such a self conscious coworker. She's really bad at her job and reports the stupidest things. She freaked out i knew her login number (not password) even though it's posted on the corner of screens, printout receipts, etc.
Some people are just so self conscious like that and constantly thinking of themselves.

Yea, I agree with others. Definitely report it so it's on record. Otherwise, she could misinterpret something and then report you. Then people would be looking at you funny. Just let HR know that you don't want any actions taken, but that you just want it on record because you thought it was weird and want to protect yourself in case something else gets misinterpreted.

Even if that were the case (it isn't just FYI), it would be far, far too risky for TC, as a male, to act on something like that. All it takes is one complaint to HR and he could lose everything. Depending on what story she makes up he could even go to jail.

I know the feeling TC, it feels awful when you make a girl creeped out by doing literally nothing. I've 'guessed' people's names I'm working with when I recognize everyone else but one person. It's not a weird thing you did. She's immature to think that you're somehow stalking her or something to deduce her name like that.

It's probably everything to do with her and nothing to do with you. Maybe she was really stalked before or even at her previous job and is just on high alert. Maybe she just likes the idea of not liking you or wanting a 'creep' to hate on in her life. Maybe you remind her of someone. Regardless, all you can do is talk to a supervisor about it and give her space and distance. Ignore her random side glances, she'll eventually see that you're there to work.
