I use Microsoft Edge as my web browser, which sets MSN as my default homepage. This page aggregates a variety of news sources for me. They have wrestling, which I enjoy. However out side of that, Ive noticed a significant portion is right wing trash. Outlets such as Fox and Newsmax or Newsweek which everywhere is the rightwing trash one. And The Telegraph which I just found out was right wing trah.

And this is something that just popped up as I was typing this from a site I never heard of but Edge just had to show me .

Oh yeah, I have to use Edge at work and that homepage is wild. Every day there's some article about "Electric Vehicles Can't Be Trusted" on there. Ditto the default news tab thing Windows has.

Is it good that Microsoft is megaphoning this stuff onto unsuspecting customers?

It's been like this for years. I have to visit MSN News every day to complete my Microsoft Rewards dailies.

I think my MS Edge homepage thinks I'm 50+. It's always a bunch of, "This is the reason so-and-so was let go from the Andry Griffith Show," type of headlines.

That's weird, I don't have that. I have a lot of ads and a lot of clickbait listicles, but nothing like, political. I don't usually click on any of these, maybe its a "the algorithm thinks you only want this" kind of thing?

I'm also in Canada, and I've found things are generally a fair bit less predatory here. This might be why I seem to get a lot of hockey stuff, even though I don't really like hockey.

My edge frontpage is also relatively normal (canadian here too, if that makes a difference).

it has a russia/ukraine news story, an article about the sphinx of giza, some hockey awards leaked info, local weather and traffic conditions, and three ads about the same foreign currency exchange service

edit: scrolling down basically just gets more of all of this. including the ads. It's super weird, if I scroll down until there's about 30 total articles displayed, approximately 10 of them are ads for the same company, that all have slightly different taglines and images

I use the Microsoft Bing/Start App solely to earn points for MS Rewards because I'm not going to pay for Gamepass out of pocket ever.

Anyway!

They are constantly pushing rightwing garbage. And when give it a thumbs down(telling them don't show me things like this), or even outright BLOCK a source, they keep feeding it anyway. No matter what. I'm guessing they are being paid to do so, but it's also entirely possible that pushing that GARBAGE is just part of the strategy of theirs. Whether for explicitly nefarious reasons or just pure greed(different kind of evil) knowing that a certain sort of folk are willing to stick around and read that kind of mess.
