CBS cancelled So Help Me Todd which does great ratings, just on the lower end for their dramas, so it got the axe. It was such a smart, clever, hilarious, and heartfelt drama that wasn't just whatever NCIS or CSI spinoff they could fit in there. And the thing is, this show got NO promotion whatsoever by the network and no support. It would be a ratings boon on so many other stations, but it's probably not getting picked up by any.

I could go on and on about the shows I invest in that get prematurely cancelled but it's so frustrating to get into any show that isn't some safe show that has no danger of early cancellation.

My mom loves that show, she will be sad now lol
She only likes 3 shows on TV at the moment and another one is in it's last season.

I hate good tv being cancelled, especially stuff that ends up being good on network tv which is currently a wasteland made for people 55+. Haven't seen So Help Me Todd but rip.

I rarely ever do the 21 episode season network TV shows anymore because of this. Usually it's all recycled crap but this one piqued my interest and I heard good things. It was the only cable drama I watched.

I watch a few comedies too because those are usually safe but I'm always terrified the ones I do watch are doing good with the ratings and still get cancelled.

Just in time for CBS to bring us an NCIS prequel, a Matlock reboot, and a second Big Bang Theory spinoff.

I wish I was making all that up.

So if you weren't making all of that up, which parts were you making up?

It's funny how much Abbott Elementary stands out simply by being a successful and competent show on network TV in this decade.

Ive basically abandoned watching all TV as it airs at this point because of cancellations. Doesnt matter if its live action, anime, whatever. There have been too many times Ive been really into something and it just stops. I wait til shows are over now.

CBS greenlighted a prequel for a young Jethro Gibbs called NCIS: Origins.

Unfortunately, none of them. NCIS Origins, a Matlock reboot with Kathy Bates, and Young Sheldon's brother is getting his own show

I don't understand how the current model for TV is remotely tenable. A billion different streaming services and huge stuff coming out with barely any fanfare.

Like ten years ago something like The Sympathizer would've been huge, and now it barely has any sort of cultural impact.

The media is really weird right now

That reminds me of how pissed off I am about Inside Job being cancelled. One season, Netflix promised to give it a second season, actually gave them the second season, everyone is working on it, and then they scrap the second season.

Netflix shows are absolutely impossible to invest in anymore because most of the good ones never last.

BBT Cinematic Universe is out of control, even Happy Days and its numerous spinoffs were limited to a ~10 year timeframe. Big Bang Theory debuted in 2007.

....lol the earlier post reminding me that NCIS spun off from JAG which debuted in 1995 so I guess that's still the reigning active champ.

SVU spun off of Law and Order which debuted in 1990! That's the only other one I can think of.

Simpsons premiered in 1989, though I suppose one show isn't really a "universe".

Frasier was a spinoff of Cheers and recently got a reboot

I get there was like a 20 year gap between the two versions of Frasier, but Cheers is the oldest source material of a current show...!

Better Call Saul might have been the only weekly TV show I bothered keeping up with over the last decade (Breaking Bad was over ten years ago), and in all that time, it feels like the only culturally relevant thing I missed was Game of Thrones.

Admittedly what I said is not 100% true I do make some exceptions on waiting until things are done like if it is something I know will be finished soon and I want to be a part of the discussion toward the end (I finally watched Stranger Things recently for instance)

a bad remake/sequel cartoon that seems extremely loosely related to Good Times, but is called Good Times and produced by Norman Lear just came out. theoretically that would link all the way back to All in the Family

yeahhhh but Law and Order was cancelled at one point and later came back so I don't give it the same credit, though you're arguably right. Similar to the Fraiser return... not even going to comment on the Good Times cartoon nobody asked for, lol

I mean the last like 2 seasons for Young Sheldon have had George Jr as the main focus and Sheldon/his mom/his sister as the B and C plots so its perfectly sensible.

Missing out on Game of Thrones turned out to be a blessing, so don't worry about it.

Well, there's hope for So Help Me Todd. Marcia Gay Harden, the lead in the show, put out a video saying that they are in talks to move to another network and to keep being vocal online. She seemed pretty positive about it too.

Honestly, most networks would kill for the ratings that it gets on CBS already, so it's a super good candidate for someone else to pick up.
