The article:

https://idahocapitalsun.com/2024/04/16/if-you-arent-sure-why-doctors-are-leaving-idaho-its-because-youre-not-listening-to-them/

A summary:

Many doctors are leaving or considering leaving states with laws that can make them liable for felonies if they try to save someone's life (usually, a pregnant woman due to the particular laws in question).

One particular quote from the article: "Shortly after that interview, my physician husband and I decided to leave Idaho." It is not uncommon for medical professionals to get together with other practitioners, so they are often leaving in pairs.

Not said in the article, but perhaps somewhat implied, is that many medical professionals are well enough off that they can afford to move. They are not just trapped in a state by poverty like a fair number of a state's debt hostages. They can, and it seems with fair frequency, ARE leaving those states.

We are probably not far from someone trying to make a law that tries to prevent doctors from leaving a state.

Hmm why wouldn't doctors stay in states where they will literally get arrested and thrown into prison for decades for practicing ethical, good faith healthcare?

Dang, man. You mean that thing that we said would happen when doctors became liable for draconian anti abortion laws happened?

It's almost like...

You know what, I got modded for speaking my mind once already. Best I let people extrapolate.

Yes, and as mentioned before, this disproportionately hurts red states outside of Texas and Florida, because rural communities were already struggling with decent medical and emergency room access, particularly in regards to obstetrics and neonatal health.

The chuds have been framing this as nothing more than some "pretend-overreaction" scheme by "leftists" to protest "pro-life" laws, because they assume that said laws would only be applied to the most blatant cases of attempted abortion or medical malpractice (same reaction they have whenever there's a story of a woman or child with a risky pregnancy or miscarriage having to go out-of-state for treatment) Because it never dawns on them that the language and hammering out of the regulations of said laws is important (a lot of them want our bills to be a few sentences long or less, "Like the Founding Fathers did" and written in layterms rather than "legalese")

Do Republicans believe in medicine though? Doesn't seem like it and I can't bring myself to feel anything for their come-uppance.

This is why it's not going to change. The rich Republicans in power will still be able to get healthcare, so it won't matter to them that it's getting harder for their constituents.

Maybe some of those constituents will realize that it's the policies of their state's leaders that have made it so they can't get healthcare, but the right-wing media machine has pretty effectively convinced them that no matter how bad the GOP is Democrats are worse so they'll keep voting Republican.

Nah, instead they'll make it a felony for women to cross state lines to receive healthcare. Those same sorts would probably also want vigilante-style systems where people would be encouraged to monitor and report on women suspected of being pregnant. You know, like Jesus intended? </hard sarcasm>

A good example being the idea of how violent Chicago is for instance. It is the go-to city for republicans to yap about. But per capita, most of their places are worse.

I can't actually think of a red city, unless you just mean like some random county with a population of 1000.

All the maps I can find color the county blue

But I DID happen to have a map of Alabama come up for no reason in my search for Florida maps and couldn't help noticing that the county housing Mobile was red. So I guess there's that at least.

Alabama's doctor shortage is insane. My GF had spinal surgery but needed general care before they figured out what was going on... it takes months to get a GP and Urgent Care, with insurance, runs in the hundreds of dollars out of pocket for a simple visit. It's ridiculous. I never thought in my life I would miss Kentucky but here we are.... then again, I knew I would hate Alabama lol.

Pretty much. My (Illinois) hospital hired a Hoosier OB/GYN just last month (and she wasn't the first red state doctor we've hired), and we've seen a big uptick of out of state applicants since Roe was overturned.

Irregardless, for all intensive purposes, I could care less.
