As to gimmicky, I said that as a word other people use derogatorily more than what I'd use. His style though is certainly more distinct than the average director. But his style is much more of a gimmick than other directors because it's so extreme and completely saturates his movies. You can take any single frame and tell it's a Wes Anderson movie vs other directors that just like a certain lighting style, or have a proclivity for long takes.
