Is there a reason to watch the old version instead of the new?

Theoretically the new one will go further, so you may want to stick with that for consistency. Supposedly there was an arc in the original anime at some point that was significantly altered from the LN, too, which would almost certainly not be the case here.

Other than that, from what everyone has told me they've been basically identical other than the new character designs (well, old they're the VN designs now) and music, right down to the pacing.

I like something about the old visual style better actually, but yeah it largely doesn't matter

I think there's something very odd about the hair being so bright in the remake. I think the faces and animations overall are better...but yeah. You can't really beat the original visuals wise. Holo just looks way more "piercing" with her eyes. Other than that, the show is practically beat for beat the same, other than putting the dude back in instead of Chloe. I'm sure there's more difference later.

Watched two more episodes in Girls Band Cry, up to episode 5 (which is as far as SobsPlease has fansubbed, I guess they'll always be a week or more delayed). This is a show I want to love. The animation is great, the presentation of the story is great, and I really like Momoka and Subaru. I just can't stand Nina, though. It's like everything she does grates on me. Nothing else to say, just wanted to rant about that, lol.

Every girls band anime should have a Kasumi-type in the lead role.

To contrast, Nina is exactly the kind of protagonist I love to see in a show like this. She's extremely brash, even when she's not always right, can't always justify herself, willing to talk trash and goade her bandmates. I love her lol.

I like Kasumi quite a bit, but mainly from when she was not longer the main character. She's like a mascot.

I continue to be fucking flabbergasted by how much Toei fumbled the ball not getting this out over here. Especially because even unlicensed I'm STILL regularly seeing GBC on several Top 10 weekly watchlist.

And boy do I love to be proven wrong about my worries in regards to the additional members.

Look, visual preference is subjective, people are going to like different things, this is true for basically any aspect of any art form. Different aspects of animation and design matter to different people in different ways. If someone told me they didn't like how Girls Band Cry looks, I would completely understand! I wouldn't even really need an explanation, it's pretty obvious why someone might not like it.

That's all prelude to say that I, personally, have come to the conclusion that I think Girls Band Cry is the best looking anime ever made.

I have never before been so enthusiastic to just see animation on screen and how characters faces are going to look, how their body is going to move, what type of physical acting they're going to express. Maybe I shouldn't be too surprised that something clicked here, I have already loved the work of Orange for some time now, and the one thing that studio still has an "issue" with (it's intentional so it's not really an issue, it's just something that I am personally against) is the limiting of the animation frames of their work to keep it more visually in line with traditional animation. Girls Band Cry has said fuck that, and opted for a completely smooth animation style that just makes me melt. I truly cannot get enough of watching this. I would have absolutely no problem just watching it unsubbed on release if I didn't also care so much about that show itself on the whole.

This is going to look absolutely great in retrospect when I post my seasonal update tomorrow and casually refer to Demon Slayer as aftereffects slop in my Wind Breaker writeup, lol.

I watched the first three episodes of GBC, then I watched a bunch of BanG Dream stuff (MyGO, the movies) before moving on to GBC 4 and 5. I was surprised, coming back to GBC, how much better it looked in comparison. Really expressive CGI and smooth movements. The only bad thing I even noticed was when drunk Momoka got picked up by the feet, her body looked super stiff then.

I think I'll always prefer the best of the best of 2D animation, but GBC probably wins in the 3D category.

To be fair I think that's intentional lol.

My one issue I've had so far is that there's been 1 or 2 scenes where the models don't cleanly blend in to the background as much as they should. It's was only REALLY noticeable in a single scene in today's episode, and even then it wasn't that bad. That's something where the color pallet of MyGO comes in handy, while the more natural color pallet of GBC makes it more difficult. Also the issue of background characters not looking as good as main characters, but I think that one is inevitable considering it's still an issue in 99% of 2D animation as it is.

But yeah I took like 30 screenshots of today's episode. I just....really like looking at it.

Oh, one other thing that puts my own 2D/3D preference into focus is GBC's OP. There are parts of it that aren't 3D, like even just the first ten seconds when theyre all falling from the sky. Now that looks amazing. They're doing an undeniably great job with the 3D, but for my taste, give me an entire anime that looks like the 2D in the OP! That would be my ideal.

I've been trying to think of my own personal "best looking anime ever" and my mind keeps going back to the movie Bubble, which is a lame choice because I didn't even really like that movie.

Definitely still understand the preference! It's not like there's a ton of good looking 3D anime to choose from, yet.

We've come a long way from Arpeggio of Blue Steel being the best looking show in the category, though.

It seems like a really boring answer, but my pick for best looking anime I've seen is probably Garden of Words.

If only TV series count then idk probably like Flip Flappers or something.

It gets tough for me with 2D because there's so many way to look at it, again. Like, is it what you like to look at best? I think Baccano is an incredible looking anime aesthetically, but it's not exactly a technical powerhouse. Mushishi has absolutely gorgeous art but it's animation is nothing special. Ping Pong has incredible animation but I don't like how it looks at all. Last Exile had an incredible integration of CG so many years ago for a truly unique look. Eureka Seven has my favorite character designs....

.....I dunno I might also just say Flip Flappers lol.

I don't watch enough movies to judge that end.

Do you think it looks better than western CGI? I certainly don't.

The expressiveness is cool and all, but I'd still take a KyoAni show over this any day in terms of pure visuals. Or something like, say, Bocchi or Frieren.

I'm not sure what you're trying to compare that to specifically. You mean, like, Clone Wars? I don't think that show looks particularly good in any way. Nothing else really coming to mind besides kids shows.

Seven episodes in, Highspeed Etoile continues to baffle me. I'm kind of glad I didn't drop it because it's almost entertaining, in its own way, to watch a story make the wrong decision every chance it gets. Spoilers if anyone cares (no one should care this anime sucks)

There have been several episodes now where I've thought, okay, this must be the race where Rin proves she isn't an absolute moron. This is the race where Rin does something impressive to justify everyone hyping her up! And then, without fail, she finds a way to fuck it up. What the hell kind of sports anime is this. Seven episodes in and she's accomplished absolutely nothing. The racing season is half over and it doesn't even feel like she's improving.

They should've made one of the other girls the main character. Sophia is cool, Youran is cool. Towa is at least cute. Kanata has spiky blue anime hair, gotta love that. But no, Rin has to be the main character even though she's terrible in every imaginable way.

What's even crazier is that this isn't even my least favorite anime of the season anymore. The latest episode of Oblivion Battery dragged it even lower somehow! Thank god for Tonbo, her golfing is the only saving grace for sports anime this season.

While I enjoy HiDive's player and want to support alternatives to a Crunchy monopoly, I really wish the licensed show I most desperately cared about watching the moment it aired wasn't the only one on the platform that can't consistently get their episodes out on time.

Finally got to watch today's Yorukura.

This show.....it's just so god damn good.

Some say you can tell when a show is truly awful when you are constantly checking how much longer you have to tolerate sitting through the episode. I can safely say the opposite is also true, where you can tell a show is truly appealing to you at at a core level when you're constantly checking the run time out of fear that you're going to run out of episode soon, and the utter joy you feel when the end credits start playing over the episode and you realize you're getting and extra 90 seconds.

I've done a deed. I watched the first two episodes of Re:Zero.

Hopefully you like it more than I did. I gave the main guy 3-4 episodes, but he wouldn't stop being a complete dickbag "look at me in a vidjagame other world lol" idiot. Kinda the same thing that turned me off Chainsaw Man, though in a different way. Denji was just a fucking jackass.

I do like that he kinda realizes Emilia (if that's her real name?) would have been pretty much fine if he hadn't gotten in her way, and then ends up helping her and making a difference after all. Again, nothing groundbreaking but fine so far.

Ive been savoring Undead Unluck by watching it slowly. Like both the MCs a lot

You just need to work your way up from bad to good! That's what I do, it makes the good ones stand out more by comparison. I'm excited for the new Jellyfish, but first I need to finish the latest episodes of meh stuff like Studio Angel and Kaiju.

While "like" is a strong word for how I feel about Highspeed Etoile, I have no qualms dropping shows I'm not vibing with and am down to 6 for the season.

This is probably what I should have done, but I really wanted to get the good shows in without burning myself out beforehand.

I too go by "save the best for last" when i have multiple seasonal shows stacked up.

Unless one show is good but depressing and i have a comedy or feels good show that i can watch after, then I do that

Watched episode 3, have now met the famous twins. It'll be tough to beat out Hayasaka from Kaguya but a good start so far

We started watching Snow White with Red Hair.

So far it's not on the level of Yona but still very good. Yona quickly jumped into my top 10 though so that's a very high bar.

We just met the older brother and he is really interesting. Seems like he could be a great not-evil antagonist.

Snow White/Red Hair is solid. It really comes down to Shirayuki and Zen's chemistry.

Which at least initially is really good. Though it does have a bit of that "they are in love after their first meeting" trope which I don't love.

I think most people prefer Yona between the two. They're actually fairly different anime in terms of tone and stuff, people just compare them because they came out around the same time and both are fantasy romances about girls with red hair. I just felt like Yona didn't go far enough, the whole anime felt like a prologue to the story I really wanted to see. It needed another season!

Snow White with the Red Hair is my jam though. Pretty much my ideal romance anime.

Oh for sure. The anime really was just the prologue. I'm at chapter 210 in the manga and it definitely gets better after where the anime stopped.

There is so much plot and story that comes later and that is really interesting and compelling. And after a real slow burn they actually go fully into the Hak/Yona romance.

I desperately wish they gave it another like three or four seasons.
