I finished The Heike Story. It was pretty crazy how quickly it moves, and some of the names bleed into each other after awhile. However, the sheer amount of sacrifices and deaths at play lead to a very morose and unnerving experience overall. Pretty enjoyable.

I finally finished another anime that I started awhile ago, and oh boy did I ever hate it. It's a new entry in my bottom 10 of all time.

The Severing Crime Edge is about descendents of murderers who inherit the murder weapons and a lust for killing. They use these powers to try and kill a girl with long hair because anyone who kills her is granted a wish. The main dude inherits a pair of murderous scissors, but he has a hair fetish so he starts protecting the hair girl instead. The premise sounded kind of neat, there are lots of cool things a story can do with magical murder weapons. Little did I know that it would wind up being one of the worst anime ever.

I can forgive the hair fetish. I went in expecting the hair fetish. I wasn't expecting all the other fetishes. And I'm talking weird fetishes too, not just just the usual fanservice panty shots or whatever. If you ever wanted to see half-naked sisters poking each other with needles and licking the wounds with copious amounts of drool, this is the anime for you. Or if you want full nudity of a knife-wielding toddler. Or erotic asphyxiation with a noose. I could go on but I'm afraid Fandom will mod me for hornyposting if I type much more even though absolutely none of this is sexy. It's just awkward and creepy.

However, even if I ignore all of that and try to judge the anime on other merits, it's still one of the worst things I've ever seen. You'd think battles where the main dude has a pair of scissors would be interesting. I mean, scissors aren't exactly the ultimate weapon. You'd expect him to need to get creative in order to win. Nope! He has bullshit protagonist powers where he enters godmode sometimes and swish insta-cuts the enemy. No excitement. Nothing about this anime was remotely fun to watch. I hated everything and everyone.

Haha, the animation's pretty terrible for the fights for sure. I mostly enjoyed the show for the unique relationship between the main duo and the oddball atmosphere it had. I wouldn't call it actually good, though.

FANTASTIC name at least.

And yeah Heike Story survived my Queue purge, I will definitely get back to it again someday. May have to restart, though.

Huh. For a moment, I thought I was reading the synopsis for Akuma no Riddle/Riddle Story of Devil. I think I'll with that...

Eh, half the yuri anime we get are still pretty lacking in kissing.

I mean it's more about just actually, like, mattering. Or being good.

We got kissing back then too but it was in Grade A garbage like Sakura Trick (which I did still watch!).

It's too bad she didn't, because Muzan's a godawful villain and the series would be way better without him.

I'm really tired of villains with bs emotional stories. Muzan is good because he only has negative qualities. He's cowardly, insecure, short tempered and short sighted, makes killing him feel great.

Regardless. If you look at the number of yuri anime we get every year, it's still pretty dismal. 2021, 2022, 2023, all meh years for yuri anime.

He gets way too much screentime though. It's so boring when it focuses on him.

Hey now. There may have been nothing explicit in Riddle, but I liked the main pairing and the poison master x "prince" pairing (and kudos for one of the girls having 2 fathers).

Dropped Sakura Trick, though. Yuu was too annoying. My garbage fave is Citrus (EDIT: no, wait, it's Valkyrie Drive)

Has it ever been "high"? There were 4 last year, and that seemed like a lot.

Yeah, that's what I'm saying. Yuri anime isn't, and has never been, in a great state.

It only happens like once a season! though the anime does milk those scenes.

Sakura Trick is fine, its just really fluffy because youre dealing with an idiot couple. The anime does end on a really stupid note and thats hands-down the one thing that keeps me from recommending it.

But its great that the author has done some stuff with it post-manga after it ended.

A decade late, but I'm watching Assassination Classroom. First episode is about what I expected, and that's exactly what I'd hoped it'd be: weird, funny, and kinda fucked up.

Assassination Classroom was (rightfully) quite big in its heyday, and still holds up very well today IMO. Good choice

Sakura Trick, at least the anime, just feels like a phony product. All the relationship stuff is bland and the excessive wet makeouts don't feel like any kind of payoff or building relationship, it feels like fanservice for dudes...which, you know, technically means it's aimed at me, but I don't have any interest in a show that's just throwing scenes at me that feel like the first 4 pages of a doujin.

I haven't watched it since it aired, though, so maybe I'm over exaggerating the issue. There's a lot of yuri anime that I look back on negatively from that era, like the formentioned Riddle Story, and probably most noteabley the complete disintegration of the initially promising Love Lab.

I still haven't watched or read AssClass. Huge fan of the writers previous work Neuro, though.

Just preordered the MyGO Weiss Schwarz deck, I'm fucking cooked fellas it doesn't get more rock bottom than this.

I finished Mashle S2. I think the serious parts were probably a bit better than S1's (particularly the Wahlberg stuff since he's a cool guy), but the comedy wasn't as funny and there wasn't as much of it. Baebiez was by far the best part, and that was only a small section of one episode (though that WAS great at least). The lack of women also stands out even more this season, haha.

I still need to watch Sakura Trick someday. And I should try that Akuma no Riddle one too, I've never heard of it before!

I bought the Popipa BanG Dream deck back in the day (and a Love Live one to battle it) but when I finally played with someone, I thought the card game itself was kind of meh. Still a fun collectable though.

Oh I ain't saying the game that's for sure, this is just for aesthetic. I have the Madoka one I bought like a decade ago tucked away somewhere.

I like that the ranting post acts like Supernatural was the biggest survivor from SuperWhoLock, despite Dr Who just starting a new season.

Chainsaw Man spoilers

If they go to a soapland and fucking Kobeni is working there I am going to LOSE MY DAMN MIND.

Chainsaw Man has been incredibly good lately. I picked it up after the anime ended not expecting much, and honestly I was right to not get my expectations super high for the most part. But this week's chapter was especially fantastic before the spoiler bar'd part but that to close out the chapter was rather entertaining. And it's been a trend of very good stuff lately.

It was in a slump for a bit there for sure, but yeah it's in a major upswing. Importantly, for very different reasons than Part 1.

Part 1 and Part 2 are such completely different beasts.

I need to catch up a bit but I've thought Part 2 has been really neat so far, Asa is so funny

What do you mean? It's been in Save My Favorite Anime Series before! It's English title is Riddle Story of Devil if that jogs your memory.

That said, looks like it's one of the titles from Funimation that didn't transfer to Crunchyroll. So you know where to go to find it.

And while I was searching for it on Crunchyroll I randomly found a 9-minute anime. So here it is if you want to watch something short with no expectations.

Asa is so funny

I love asa, might be my favorite csm character

I've been disappointed in CSM's art recently. Feels like it hit the inevitable manga-author-burnout phase, which hurts some of the big important scenes.

With that said Asa is consistently fantastic. Her 'date' with Denji was legitimately hilarious.

Wind Breaker was kinda mid with some moments of great fight choreography but damn the last couple episodes have been bangin

I started watching two more airing anime (which, counting the dropped Unnamed Memory, brings me to a total of 26 this season, sheesh). Not fully caught up in either, but I'll post some early thoughts.

-6 episodes into the new Spice and Wolf. It's really good! I like Holo a lot, she's got lots of personality. I can see why so many people love her. Lawrence is fine too. I was hoping for more small-scale trading than there's been so far, they've really only made one fur deal, but maybe the story will get there now that this first arc is done. Definitely not an all-time favorite, at least not yet, but I'm enjoying it. I'm not a huge fan of there being a stereotypical evil church, though. Really hoping that doesn't become a big dramatic thing.

-3 episodes into Go Go Loser Ranger, and, I dunno. This feels like it has a really interesting idea but it's being handled in a way that isn't appealing to me at all. The serious and comedic tones are clashing. I'm most interested in the idea of invaders being forced to go through the motions to prop up the public image of their enemies... but it's being done through what's essentially a literal goofy Saturday morning cartoon show. Children should be able to see through this. This whole "invasion" should've long since become a joke to the general public and not work as a publicity spectacle anymore. I want to get invested in the idea of an underdog using subterfuge to fight back against the "heroes", but I just can't take the setting seriously enough to actually care about anything yet.

Holo is one of those Maomao things, where she makes the show better by being there. Lawrence is no slouch either, and their interactions are really what the show is about, way less the economics and stuff.
