The people you know, or have meaning in your life will have connections even if you don't know. That person that seems familiar but you don't know why. That's part of it. The ending is everyone gathered together after what ever life they led after the island. They are in fact dead in that last scene where it's explained. The flashbacks were specifically character driven arcs, not devices to further the plot which was more common.
