There's a big difference between the people I see walking around NYC than back home.

Is this hornyposting?

Yeah, I think there are actually stats to back up that people who live in neighborhoods that are highly walkable are more likely to get good levels of physical activity.

More people so more chances of seeing someone attractive.

Otherwise not true. I've lived in a rural town where I was like damn everybody ugly but that was just one town.

Here where I live now I sometimes go into Walmart and everyone is mid to uggo and sometimes it's swarming with good looking people.

It's like it's one or the other.

Are You actually thinking about the average New Yorker you pass or are you focusing ion the max, the hottest people in NYC vs elsewhere? If its the latter then its just because theres more of them so theres more chances.

The actual % is probably similar. But there's far more people, so (in terms of raw numbers) far more attractive people simply due to the larger sample size.

Many of the posters have hit the highlights.

More people means there's more chances for you to catch a glimpse of someone handsome that you focus on.
Cities have options for getting places other than a car, which means more physical activity.
Big city hustle attracts active types and discourages people who don't have ambition. That can impact people's personal choices about physical condition.

I would add one more that I haven't seen yet:

Cities have more delivery options, allowing people who don't want to get out and about stay home and have necessities delivered to them. Less healthy people are more likely to make that choice, and consistently making that choice leads to worse health outcomes. It's a vicious cycle, but it means you're less likely to run into them as you are out and about.

Adding to what everyone has already said, big cities attract people making more money. Which allows the to eat healthier, wear more fashionable clothing, have/use gym memberships/personal trainers, etc.

Larger sewer system. So the Morlocks chose to live down there instead. Smaller cities don't offer that alternative.

It seems to be common in areas where people make more money. Poor country folk around here literally go to Exxon in their bath robes and slippers. Don't give a shit about their appearance.

I think it's cus they're more likely to get dressed up before going out, since fashion is a lot more valued in big cities than it is in smaller towns. like the idea of "dress to impress" is a lot stronger in bigger cities since you never know when new opportunities might pop up.

in a smaller town? I don't care how I look when I'm going to the grocery store and "fun things" are further away, which means a long drive, which means I'm wearing comfy clothes and I don't care.
I also know more people here, so I'm not looking to impress them. I'm gonna see the same people at the store as I do passing by when I'm doing yardwork, so it doesn't matter that much.

it's like first date clothes versus 100th date clothes. on the first date, it's a stranger, so you wanna impress them. on the 100th date? you know each other pretty well (hopefully) and you won't care about wearing sweatpants.
same with a big city, it's like an endless first date so you wanna look good.

NYC specifically, because hot women move there to find rich husbands. The ratio of 20 and 30 something women to men there is pretty good if you're a guy.

i've noticed the same thing in downtown austin (as compared to, say, the greater metro or the boondocks)

it may be that it has a higher income crowd with higher lifestyle, fitness, and personal presentation standards and the means and luxury to accomplish it and probably some [unspoken] social pressure to conform to such

If this phenomenon actually exists, I think the answer is pretty obviously "more money". If you can afford the lifestyle decision to move to a major city then you can already afford to take care of yourself and probably have a background that taught you how to do so well.
