Better than like half of America. 54% of Americans only read at a 5th grade level.

Who are you trying to write for?

It's a bit of a useless comment anyway. What's the difference in reading level between a 16 year old and a 25 year old?

And a not-insignificant chunk of the US population aren't even that literate.

How does that translate to a 'reading level'? Does a 50 year old also have a higher 'level' than a 30 year old?

There's a point where these things lose their meaning. Most teenagers are active readers, if for no other reason than schoolwork. Many adults don't pick up a book again if they don't have to.

They don't really do a lot of comparative literacy reports with people in their mid-twenties. The data doesn't really exist.

They do in fact do comparative literacy reports with children, though.

The '10th grade' thing is just a dumb comment out of context.

If you were writing, say, instructional material, you may want it to be understood by people with a wide range of literacy (which is not always determined by age).

You're overcomplicating the educational benchmarks.

How does one even gauge reading levels? I knew plenty of 9th and 10th graders who couldn't read for shit back in the day yet they kept being moved up to the next grade

Kids get a fuckton standardized tests in school. Like 2-3 times a year. Parents and teachers get the results of them.

in my district kids that are below get extra help. But that doesnt keep them back.

9th-10th grade reading level doesnt automatically mean "books only a 9th-10th grader can enjoy." A lot of stuff falls under that. Unless you're trying to become Thomas Pynchon or something, I wouldn't take it very seriously.

There are certainly versions of it where thats true. The prose varies a lot from one edition to another.

Its also true that a number of philosophical works are quite easy to read from a mechanical point of view, while others (see Kant) are terrible writers and harder to read. However, their skill as a writer doesnt necessarily correlate in any meaningful way with the complexity of the concepts theyre exploring.
