I know this was a old article but, its just crazy how we found out how plastics are kind of poisoning so many but the outrage seems so little. Like, its why so many are getting more cancer and all these other problems but it seems like the reaction was just a shrug, ugh.

I mean, you think there would be more outrage. Like, it seems like plastics are doing as much harm as smoking in many ways but the push to replace things with plastics seems like a small effort at best.

meh

if microplastics weren't giving us cancer all the chemicals unregulated companies dumped in the drinking water from the industrial revolution until now would

We've completely forgotten the concept of a collective response, we're all just individual consumers now and the only response we can fathom is an individualized cultural one, making conspiracy theories, or doing ineffective consumer boycotts.

We know the corporations are not going to stop if this makes them even a single atom of profit. They're willing to pay the tobacco industry settlement on this in 30 years. We know the government won't help us because they believe in corporate domination, they're bought, and they don't want to stop the gravy train or remind people that they can do stuff.

The only thing we can actually do is the same as for all other problems. Organize and act together to solve our problems.

What could possibly be an alternative to plastic? Most foods and drinks come in plastic containers. Do refillable water bottles also put microplastics into our bodies? Does plastic anything put microplastics into our bodies, or only certain kinds of plastics? I'm asking legitimately because I don't know the answers to any of these questions.

For take-out there are plenty of alternatives, including biodegradable materials or plain old paper/cardboard. Refillable water bottles are widely available as stainless steel rather than plastic.

every single paper or cardboard item that is meant to replace plastic is covered in forever chemicals, otherwise they would just fall apart while trying to hold food.

and refillable water bottles are great, until you realize that most people are just filling them with bottled water because less and less people trust tap water every day.

I guess what's depressing is that with stuff like this it feels like so much of modern inventions is more toxic to are very lives then you realized. It was one thing when it was just smoking or avoiding heavy polluted areas but now it feels everywhere.

What's most depressing is you posted the article without even an excerpt

I noticed working in warehouses that ready to eat meals play a huge role in microplastic consumption. Not just the food itself but the packaging it comes in

Imagine you're in a Saw trap, you've got twenty minutes to eat a buffalo or your skeleton will explode or some shit.

If Jigsaw came on the horn and was all "by the way the skeleton bombs are like super carcinogenic, get checked out if you pull this off," I'm gonna be mad but it's not exactly a priority, you feel me?

I want to know what options there are for whole-home filtration systems that actually fucking work for removing PFAS from the water.
Because the most horrifying thing about those chemicals is that direct absorption thru the skin (like when showering) is even worse than drinking water w/ it in it. So you have to filter every fucking drop of water coming into your home system to be safe.

And yeah, gradually more and more % of our digested food in our stomachs will be microplastics. It would be nice if we did shit about it.
They're two different but related (abundance of plastics) problems, and neither gets even 1/10000 of the outrage it should.

These forums largely focus on social or conservative/Republican outrage. Im sure theres a subreddit for outrage about micro plastics.

And that's what is most depressing, we are all kind of soft poisoned and are just suppose to wait till we all get cancer or something else from it.

It pisses me off, but what can I do other than reducing the waste I produce? The criminals doing the bulk of the pollution aren't just getting away with it, they're being richly rewarded! As someone who loves seafood, I'm also pissed off at mercury poisoning.

There's pretty much nothing we can do about it. We can reduce some plastic use, but there will still be plenty of things we can't eliminate.
