its a pretty weird show, definitely different than the duelist kingdom series that I remember and also a bit darker. I like that it's more than just the card game, esp. cus Yugi/Pharaoh were called king of games so you'd think that'd include more than just the in-universe TCG.

but yeah, really liking it so far. I'm on episode 5 out of I think 30ish.

The manga was originally about several different kinds of games with Bakura as the villain and then Duel Monsters ended up being really popular IIRC and it ended up being the bigger part of the manga. They eventually just stuck to it. It has an interesting concept and I like the darker tone, especially with Atem. The opening is also pretty damn sick.

The manga was originally pretty dark, but Ill always love Duelist Kingdom. Also loved the Egyptian God season.

Bakura I think only appeared in one story arc before the card games took off (along with Kaiba becoming a more prominent character; he was a one-shot villain with the card game motif while Bakura was the RPG guy (the story was adapted for Duel Monsters))

am i misremembering this (was a very long time ago),
or did one of the stories in the manga basically end w/ the electrocution-death of several thugs as revenge for gang-assaulting yugis female friend?

Although I agree I wish it would have been more mature, 4kids really did hit the nail on the head with the shadow realm (instead of just straight up death)

Yes. In the sub/manga, the shadow realm didn't exist- it was always death. 4kids changed it to the shadow realm for kids, but honestly it was a great change. It made yugioh more interesting imo

Yes. For example, the duel between Yugi and Arcana. The dub had spinning saws that sent them to the shadow realm. In the original it just cuts their legs off. The tag duel with Yugi and Kaiba vs those two Shadow Hunters on the roof of that tower had the losers fall to their deaths instead of the shadow realm.
