i made a topic about this a little while back, saying i hated this when i was 13, but im willing to give it a second chance 20+ years later

so like, man the graphics in that game are amazing. especially for the time. areas come to life with random weather effects, day & night cycles, and all around the atmosphere is top notch. all the major areas are linked, and theres no loading screens between them, so it really feels like youre exploring a strange alien world

combat is pretty braindead tho. dodge button only works half the time, theres a shield move thats completely useless, and every encounter plays out the same. and theres only like 3 bosses in the entire game lol wtf?

back then, i hated that this wasnt a traditional star fox game, but now that im older i wish more series would switch it up like this. i get that this was gonna be "dinosaur planet", but i actually liked getting out the ship and exploring an alien world, zelda style. it was a cool, fun way to expand the star fox universe

tricky is annoying as fuck tho. it wouldnt be so bad if he didnt constantly talk for no reason. trying to figure out puzzles and hes just sitting there like "WHERE ARE WE GOING???" "AW, COME ON FOX" "YAWNNNN"

and having to collect mushrooms to feed him just felt like overdesign. a lot of the collectathon crap does in this. three different ways to cause explosions, three different ways to generate fire, and they all have their own unique items and abilities and puzzle solutions. its just so much.

and man do they reuse the same puzzles over and over. and the only truly functional reward are the energy cells to power your ship, and i found so many secrets and did side quests just for them... but come to find out they were for sale in the shop for 10 scarabs each the entire time V____v why

...but then you get to ride a triceratops and fight a t-rex so nvm fuck it this game is great 8.3 maybe even 8.4/10 for the time

I remember wanting to try out Assault because it looked like more of a follow-up to 64 but never got around to it. Is that kind of what it is or was I way off?

it's a mix of 64 and adventures gameplay wise. There are 10 missions, of those 3 of them are purely on rails, the rest are on-foot/all-range mode in some mix, with various blasters and weapons and such, landmaster included in a few missions. If you're looking for purely 64 it is not that. The rails missions are at least not throwaways like the planet-travelling parts of adventures though, and it's at least mission-based rather than open world.

Also Sauria is one of the on foot missions so it's a nice callback

It's not really a mix of Adventures at all though? Unless you're purely counting Crystal being there and having a level take place on dinosaur planet or whatever. But otherwise it's far more like 64.

I would not call Assault a mix of Adventures but I played it for the first time last year and really enjoyed it.

I guess mix of adventures was a poor description, I was trying to convey that a majority of it takes place on foot as opposed to on rails in an arwing. Even the levels that have all-range mode arwing still have a substantial amount of on-foot content in the level.

It's definitely closer to 64 than adventures was, but it's still a far cry from it as a whole imo.

you are so real for saying this.

also, assault is a pretty fun game. i think the rail shooter parts were the strongest, but i didn't dislike the on foot missions either.
