My fence needs replacing, and I called seven fence companies. Literally four of them said theyre not interested, and of the three that said theyre interested, only one actually bothered to schedule something and show up. He quoted me $8500 for 95 linear feet of wooden privacy 8ft tall fencing, and said earliest he can install is in September.

That doesnt sound so bad if youre adding these windows. But based on your description, I take it you were trying to replace three existing windows?

8ft tall x 6ft wide wood fence panels cost about $60. 95ft / 6ft = 16 panels.

Rough material cost:
16 panels @ $60/panel + 10 posts @ $10/post + $200 in concrete + $200 in paint =~ $1500 in raw materials. Say $2000 in raw materials and one time material cost (like hardware, screws, brushes to paint).

+$6500 on top of that for labor is ridiculous.

Ah yes go to school just so you can know how to install a fence yourself. How practical

Installing a fence isnt technically difficult, just labor intensive. Itd take two guys maybe five days to remove and put 95ft worth of fencing. 5 days * 2 people * 8 hours a day = 80 hours * $25/hr = $2000 in labor. Plus insurance, plus profit, plus various overhead, say +$3000 above material.

This project should be reasonable at $5000ish, not $8500. Thats just nuts.

I installed my parents fence when I was 13, it's not that difficult. I imagine there's enough information on the internet now that anyone could do it.

No. Go to school to learn carpentry, so you eventually be the guy that supervises the guys that install the fence.

But I also meant it in a broader sense. Dont be the guy spending $2000 to install a toilet and sink. Be the guy getting paid $2000 to install a sink and a toilet.

Get a second chain link fence, place it immediately behind the first fence but offset by an eighth of an inch or so.

Repeat until you have fourteen chain links in a row but they're all a little wonky and the wires form a whole piece of metal.

I included fence removal in that time estimate. Putting up a new fence of 95ft in length would only take 2 days at most for two people. I was generous and estimated 2 additional days for removal and 1 day buffer.

Tried getting a fence last year for our house which was new construction. Basically all the fence companies get sucked up by new developments for all the common areas + other new construction. Got a quote June 1 and didn't start until mid-July. $10k for 280 ft of vinyl plus 20 feet of iron fencing. The neighbors did split the cost though.

Disposing of the old fence costs money as well
