man u cant even tell this is an edgar wright movie for the most part

its not snappy, its not witty, it was soulless. i understand why its a bunch of pricks at each others throats, that just isnt fun to watch

it lacked the deft hand i usually see in his movies, and i dont even like edgar wright. the cornetto wrapper shot was just...so weird compared to hot fuzz for instance. this weirdly flat shot that screams notice me

the plot is... fine. aliens are turning people into robots. cool. but like, huh? they show up decently early, and thats fine. and the bit of having to pretend theyre bar crawling so the robots dont catch on, thats fun. then nothing happens with it. and it just keeps going and going and going

i have to wonder if this movie is like, at the audiences expense. like it almost seems like he's taking the piss out of the viewer. like in a "heres your slop you disgusting savages" way

Wasn't there also a better movie with a similar name or premise at the time. I remember that for some reason

It was actually my favorite on my first watch. You gotta understand, my friend showed it to me completely blind, as in I'd never even heard of it, and pretended it was really just a drinking film.

So while the random beers was a little "hm..." the bathroom scene took me completely by surprise. And the twelve bars (I think it was twelve) went a long way to diving it structure, which was very much appreciated.

But on a rewatch, I appreciated Shawn a lot more. Though Hot Fuzz I still don't really get. Most people say it's the best but it just wasn't funny, or else I didn't get the joke.

Pegg, Frost, and Wright have a flair for parodies with hostage-to-nostalgia characters.

Shaun of the Dead: A working-stiff against a zombie outbreak
Hot Fuzz: An over-achiever against a deeply-entrenched village cult
The World's End: An under-achiever against a space-alien invasion

This line from a review for The World's End could be used to describe each movie in the "[Three Flavours] Cornetto" trilogy:

"Fears of assimilation and domestication and the loss of youthful fire are never far from the movie's mind; neither is the altogether wise and reasonable sense that, while we should strive to be better, kinder, more mature people, we still are who we are, and if we cannot tolerate one another's frailties and treat each other decently, there's no hope for the species. The film has great fun painting modern life itself as a prolonged and largely invisible conspiracy to rob people and their world of all personality."

I found The World's End to be insanely depressing.
Shaun of the Dead was ok.

But Hot Fuzz... I love that movie.
