Boeing Starliner being launched by ULA rockets. I worked for ULA for about 6 years, really nice to see this launch finally happening. So many delays, mainly due to Starliner, over the past few years.

This is the first crewed launch if they wasn't clear.

The failed unmanned launch back in 2019 was crazy
https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2019/12/20/boeings-starliner-flies-into-wrong-orbit-jeopardizing-trip-to-the-international-space-station.html

NASA and Boeing have yet to identify the precise cause of Starliner's issue but Bridenstine walked reporters through what the partners know so far.

"It appears as though the mission elapse timing system had an error in it," Bridenstine said.

The mission elapse timing system is essentially Starliner's internal clock. It is crucial to telling the spacecraft's computers when and how to fire its rocket thrusters to reach the correct orbit.

"That anomaly resulted in the vehicle believing that the time was different than it actually was," Bridenstine said. "Because that timing was a little bit off, what ended up happening is the spacecraft tried to maintain a very precise control that it normally wouldn't have tried to maintain and it burned a lot of [propellant] in that part of the flight."

I was on a call where they were discussing the failure and I was just like..."really, a timing fuck up in the software?"

It shouldn't be, which is why it was so hilarious.

My memory is fuzzy, but I think it was ultimately a miscommunication issue in not fully understanding when the timer should start. It not understanding what "T-0" is

A lot of issues with things like this can happen for seemingly basic faults

https://twitter.com/thejackbeyer/status/1433618654889865216?t=H0OUYAJTRY2zNQq6_OUfXg&s=19

Another company I worked at. This was our very first flight. One of the 4 engines prematurely cut off (due to a faulty pin in the harness), and Range Safety had to blow it up (using the Flight Termination System) because it was being erratic.

Thankfully, my system that I worked on was the flight termination system. So... It was good that it actually worked.

Na, I'm electrical engineering, so mainly hardware.

It wasn't anything complicated, really just a miscommunication in a group of people not fully understanding how the system works + it not being identified in the software testing.

Like, on ULAs side, before each mission, it's simulated in the labs to verify navigation and software and hardware timing. So it's just weird it was never noticed by Boeing during testing.

But I don't know if a deeper investigation was ever done that I just didn't hear about.

well they only need wheels to land, not to launch

Boeing Starliner being launched by ULA booster and upper stage rockets. I worked for ULA for about 6 years, really nice to see this launch finally happening. So many delays, mainly due to Starliner, over the past few years.

This is the first crewed launch if they wasn't clear. If successful, it's a second American launch company for getting crews to the ISS. SpaceX being the other.

I guess Elon doesnt consider it necessary to physically isolate the crew before launch to prevent sickness or infection.

Emergency Slide sounds like a dance move from the early 80s.
