Sounds dumb. I'd rather just follow the signs than have to look stuff up in a book. What if someone else is using the book? What if there's a line, even? Why would you want signs that are hard to read?

You know these are all on computers now right?

Like it's all digitalized now. At least it's this way in all libraries I've been to.

You just go one of the computers, type the name of the book (or category) and when you find it, copy the number down and go find it.

It's suoer easy and I couldn't imagine an easier way that doesn't involve a shit load of money and re-labeling and reclassifying thousands of books per library

No no no it should never have been a thing to begin with. There's no re-anything. It should have be originally done in an intuitive way.

I'm a librarian, and even a lot of us are saying it's an antiquated system. Lots of potential alternatives, but there are older librarians and even members of the public who cling to it.

The weird thing about the Dewey Decimal System is that it is privately owned, meaning your library has to pay a license to use it, right? I learned this many years ago when the company that owns it acquired the place I was working for at the time. Basically, they get yearly fees from every library that uses it.

Dewey devised a taxonomy AND a hashing function, that turned bookshelves into dynamic data structures. That happened when Grant was president. It may be obsolete now, but it was pretty innovative at the time.

i actually work for the org that 'owns' DDS. we charge a fee to access WebDewey, the online version. there are also print versions available as traditional books for a one-time purchase.

Is not the specific content or anything but you both have that "hater" inclination in topics/posts, often with irrational justifications.
