Yea, I do think it could be made today.

Yes. Anytime anyone asks this question I simply point to the continuing existence of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Nah, I don't care about you one way or the other. You made a topic, got butthurt because people didn't take it seriously (nor should they), and complained. I offered you a solution, you aren't interested taking said solution.

Its a tough one because I think it absolutely holds up and audiences in general are still receptive to it, but I dont think the actors and studios would be willing to take the risk on something like this

there was also a ton of controversy about the movies treatment of people with disabilities even then that I can see both sides on. In some respects using the language of oppression even to prove a point is still using that language

tl;dr its one example of a movie that I think probably wouldnt get made today even though it would still be successful

And the majority of the replies to the topic are participating constructively, and the reason I don't leave is because this topic is an example of how people like you are just a vocal minority, however irritating it can be sometimes.

I dont think so. Mainly RDJ and the "never go full R lines". More likely that studios would just avoid it.

Theres no space for nuance in jokes. People are dumber and will take everything at face value rather than the satire it is.

The Community D&D episode that was removed for blackface is back on Peacock, so they're clearly starting to ease up on that kind of thing depending on the context.

i don't think it's about people not realizing it's satire. in 2008 when Tropic Thunder was made there was this attitude that we were post-racism, so shows and movies felt free to use "ironic" racism to mock the racists

but the thing is, 2016 revealed that there are still a lot of people who are racist like that. so people who experience racism every day don't want to be confronted with the language of racists in entertainment. Using racist language to make a joke is still using racist language.

so I see the perspective of people who don't want to see that, and I definitely think no major studio would put a whole bunch of money into a movie built around that

Ehhhhh his character is a "dark elf". There was definitely implication there, especially given Chang's character. They even joke about it in the episode itself with things like having Pierce specifically hate him and say things like "I attack him! I attack blackface!"

Shirley even says "You all gonna ignore the obvious hate crime over here?"

I think the crux of the matter is that of course the movie could be made today, its not breaking any laws. Good luck getting enough funding for it and big named actors though.

People would wonder why theyre making the same movie that came out only 16 years ago. Think thats not enough time passed for there to be a remake.
