I think it would have been much better without BotW. By the time I was done with BotW I was so sick of it and it felt like a chore. So the idea of doing all that again but better is just nah fam. Ill pass.

Also, BotW was already incredibly sluggish, so Im sure TotK is even worse from a frame rate standpoint.

Nah, it's WAY too much of a grind. The game doesn't respect your time at all, BotW was bad about it but TotK takes it to a whole new level. There's better games to play.

good game with a lot of wasted potential. It added so much to botw but then was almost comically jarring at times. The game feels so disjointed with the way its supposed to be a sequel to botw but then hardly references it.

There is also NO reason that the overworld music shouldve been exactly the same. I was pretty disappointed when i jumped off the islands and started hearing the same music again

Good but not great game. There were a number of story beats I truly hated but it was mechanically very solid and improved on BOTW's mechanics in a lot of great ways. Also if they do a BOTW 3 or w/e where that same Zelda incarnation goes through literal hell again I am personally flying to Japan to break Shigeru Miyamoto's kneecaps. She's been through enough.

I liked the plot a lot less than BotW's, but the game was really fun and didn't feel worse to me for having played BotW first. I liked touring the same Hyrule again and seeing how everything changed and moved around. And the sidequests were more interesting (not counting shrines).

BotW definitely had more of an impact on me; I feel like the story was a hell of a lot better in how it was told, plus the whole world/experience was new at the time. That being said, I think TotK improved upon everything else, so I almost feel like a hipster for saying that I still hold BotW in higher regard despite that. It was just one of those unique, one-of-a-kind video gaming experiences for me, and that's something you can't ever recreate or experience in quite the same way again.

Anyway, I'd rate both extremely highly, probably as close to a 10 as you can get for me. I just wish TotK told a better story.

I think totk is better mechanic wise, but as an overall package it just doesnt try as hard. There is straight up 0 explanation about the sheikah tech being gone and the game doesnt expect you to care I guess. They reused the memory tears for literally no reason.

Some baffling decisions made that couldve make totk head and shoulders a better game

Its not as unpopular an opinion as you think. Basically some people prefer the story driven aspect of the games and those people prefer BOTW for its tighter, more cohesive story. Some people prefer the mechanical aspect of the games and those people prefer TOTK for its greatly expanded set of powers, crafting, and many quality of life improvements. Nothing is wrong with either preference, just comes down to what you enjoyed more. Personally I feel like Rauru is one of the biggest Mary Sue's in all of fiction and his existence makes TOTK worse and even retroactively makes BOTW worse. Literally feels like someone self-inserted their god mode fursona into the game.

While it isn't outright stated, I always got the impression that all the old Sheikah tech got repurposed as Purah and crew expanded the functionality of the towers etc.

Frame rate stand point? I never ran into a frame rate issue at all. Handheld or docked, frame rate was super consistent.

Breath of the Wild ran sub 20 FPS all the fucking time, so since TotK is supposedly BotW but more stuff on the same hardware, I cant imagine it wouldnt do it even more.

BotW had a tendency to slow way the fuck down when you killed a moblin. I think it got at least a little better in the Switch version after a patch. I only noticed TotK slowing down when doing really wacky shit with Zonai devices or when traveling long distances on really fast vehicles.

Great game, mostly an improvement to BotW, but I preferred the puzzles in BotW for the most part. The Sheikah Shrines felt more satisfying to solve somehow compared to Rauru's Shrines.

If i remember correctly, an official interview gave the reasoning that the technology just disappeared and that we shouldnt worry about it, which is absurd.

I can forgive discrepancies in Zeldas that arent connected, but this is literally a direct sequel so idk why they were so haphazard about the lore here

Dawg youre judging a games frame rate without even having played it. Totk isnt perfect with the frame rate, but it runs much better than day 1 botw.

I think the only time things got bad for me was when i was making some ridiculous zonai creations

I didnt even touch BotW until it was 2 or 3 years old with every patch, so Im judging it based on that. It was fucking awful frame rate wise, and TotK supposedly is that with more stuff. As a software developer, Im going to assume what 12 years of experience and Occams Razor both scream at me.

Its just so strange how botw went so deep into the lore and past of this version of link and Hyrule, and then for totk they justkind of hang it out to dry?

The small parts that do reference botw almost feel like easter eggs rather than substantial parts of the game, which is absolutely crazy for a direct sequel. I dont blame people for jumping ship after that interview lmao

BotW and TotK basically made me give up on the idea of a connected timeline at all and just consider groups of Zelda games as different continuities. I think that's a better way to do things, tbh.

Like as examples, the NES games are their own continuity, OoT->MM->WW->PH->ST is another, SS->BOTW->TOTK is another, etc. It's based off of direct plot-relevant references.

I think the reason the lack of connection is particularly strange in totk is that its supposed to be a direct sequel to botw. Games taking place thousands of years apart? Whatever, theres gonna be some discrepancies. Games taking place 5 years apart in the same continuity tho? Just feels kind of lazy and jarring

Yeah TotK as a direct sequel just fails hard, it's incredibly weird. I like the story on it's own, but it's like they didn't care about continuity with the very game it's a followup to.

Meh, more of the same, and I didn't have much regard for the original.

If anything, one of the aspects I found very tedious in the first game (weapon durability/management) was made even worse in the sequel due to weapons being made overall even more brittle unless you took the time to fuse something to them.
