That doesn't eliminate expression and personality, just refines it to what makes sense. The Novelty still persists.

That being said, there is the initial impression of a more varied, open problem-solving novelty that is lost with depth. This is true of any competition of significant potential depth, given enough investment, but it does adjust the parameters of what the typical player puts into chess. You start with that problem-solving joy, but if you go far enough, all of that is trivialized and put to the wayside. The arithmetic doesn't turn into calculus, it turns into a hard drive capacity contest.

All it proves is that they can memorize what you're supposed to do better than other.

Every Chess move has a counter move, it's just a matter of which person remembers more of them.

Learning Crazyhouse completely ruined playing Chess for me.

Queen's Gambit wouldn't be as exciting if I knew what was happening.

Not really.

You can know everything there is to know about how to be a successful Quarterback in the NFL, but if you don't have the physical attributes to put that information into practice, it's useless. Unless you want to be a coach.

edit: chess is pvp and requires a certain amount of both meanness and sportsmanship. i agree that not everyone will ever have those attributes, but you can still learn to play against a computer. chess.com has progressive AI that are really really good.

To an extent, but chess is primarily about the memory contest. Tic-tac-toe has a hard limit to relevant information, checkers is human-solvable, combat sports are more about muscle memory.

I downloaded a chess app and once I got to hard mode, I didnt stand a chance. The cpu was like 5-6 steps ahead of me. Anything I did, they predicted it way long before I knew I was in trouble.

I know how but I dislike the game.

Chess is partly a memory contest, but more of it is tactical and positional awareness. I went up from 600 elo to 1400 in a year and while I got better at memorizing my opening and its variations, thats only for like 8-10 moves per variation, the rest of the chess games Im on my own and had to sharpen my tactical and positional awareness

Yeah I imagine being a 900-1000 rating is where things are fun, in any game I actually get good at, I just become miserable and miss the days of my noobness.

Chess though I think has to be rough, because theres no execution aspect to it as well, so its all just knowing the game

Yeah I'm the type who knows how the pieces move and what the win conditions are but doesn't care to learn the centuries' worth of meta. I'd rather learn to play by playing, making my own mistakes and figuring out a better strategy.

Which ultimately makes chess not for me. Seems the only way to play against a like-minded individual is to play chess against someone who does not want to play chess, which is the kind of thing you generally can't make happen.

And playing against anyone else is just a certain ass-whooping with unavoidable lessons on centuries' worth of meta.

Understanding the opening portion of the game is important but memorizing wont help. You need to understand the whys in order to have any kind of success because there are just too many variations. This is more true the better the competition.

Chess is brutal because unless you are a top 5 player in the world you lose a lot. I get into it in spurts because losing bothers me too much.

This, its not really all about memorizing, theres literally millions of variations that can occur and no human can remember all of it. If it was all memory grandmasters wouldnt need to spend like 10 minutes on a move in a classical game after like move 10.

I'm actually better at Shogi than at chess. It's a minigame in Yakuza. I started off by attempting to not learn how to play and just putting the minigame AI against an AI on a website I pulled up on my phone, but it totally didn't work.

I mean, I clobbered the minigame AI. The part that didn't work was trying not to learn how to play. Before I was halfway done with the tournament in YK1, I was saying to myself "now that's an odd move" or "why didn't it just..." and eventually I got all "give me the controller" and started actually playing myself.

I assume chess would work more or less the same way.

I wouldn't call it memorizing per se but you kinda just learn similar situations. No chess position will be the same throughout the whole game but you'll find slots that are the same ro take advantage of

I watch this every few months. As an educator the message is applicable to learning beyond chess. The tl/dw version is play a lot, dont worry about outcome, you will begin learning as you see things occur time and time again. Its not a tactics video, its more philosophy of how to start down the path.
