Star Ocean has scifi objects, but for some reason they still insist on sticking to ye olde European settings for these games, which baffles me.

Rogue Galaxy hardly had anything to do with space pirates, even thought the characters claimed they were. They just travel to stereotypical jrpg locales, like jungles and ancient ruins. There is one futuristic town with two of the worst dungeons in gaming. Another town is a ye olde European town, yet again.

The Xeno series, specifically Saga, is the only one that I feel embraced it the whole time. Spaceships, future tech, aliens, robots, androids, guns, computers, AI, VR, all that stuff. No peasant towns, no haunted forests, no goblins, king arthur swords, or knights.

Why is this such a rare thing for JRPGs. You would say it is because of their culture not having much scifi, but then explain FF7, Evangeleon, Xeno, etc.

As far as i know, SO1-3 are very old European settings. Forests, caves, swords, magic. One character uses a blaster sometimes, but he is a fish out of water.

Rogue Galaxy is a huge shame. It starts promising. Spaceships, sandworms, etc. The space pirates dont do anything space piratey, besides calling themselves that. They just gather treasure on stereotypical planets themed after stereotypical jrpg tropes. Jungle. Beach. Temple. There is the one town that is futuristic, but for some reason, nothing else is. And that town has two dungeons which are just steel halls and a dank prison stage. I dont know why they couldnt stick with the scifi stuff, and devolved into tropey stuff.

It is, but it is pretty archaic today. I really wish there was something a little more visually interesting, like a ps1 era game. We did have Xenogears, ff7/8, and Xenosaga though. Xenosaga did it perfectly.

Star Ocean (unless you play IV) is the biggest tease for a sci-fi rpg. I thought when 3 came out it'd be a real sci-fi adventure. The twist didn't even bother me. I guess there's still Mass Effect.

Oh yeah the Battle Network and Digimon Cybersleuth games are also cyberpunk.

For a Western indie game styled like a JRPG you have Cosmic Star Heroine.

Oh and Baroque for weird ass creepy cyberpunk.

Cosmic Star Heroine.

If you want a Sega CD esque game that goes super fast it is worth playing. I liked it but I never finished it because just it went way too fast. Jack Move can be beaten in 10 hours or less, it's a Cyber Punk game it's fine.I like it but Cosmic Star Heroine minor spoilers f was fighting all this crazy shit and then a villian just suddenly joined my party with no explanation. It also had a damn Chrono Trigger fair too. It was just odd. Let me chill. I think that is a trademark of the studio games but just I left a club I thought that was dramatic enough. Slow down.

I may laugh at star ocean 4's main story a lot, but I legit do appreciate it for being that one star ocean game where you go from planet to planet a lot and having a ro-bro for a party member. I also liked how the main party hang out spot was your ship, and being able to room with whoever........or basically just reimi.

Oh man I got a good answer. SaGa. A lot of the games are sci-fi like you seem to want. Robots, spaceships, time travel, etc. Many of them are fantasy (mainly the Romancing SaGa games), but many are also sci-fi (especially SaGa 2 and 3 as well as SaGa Frontier).

How do you define "hard" sci-fi, exactly? I love Trek, in all its flavors, but if someone asked me to recommend them hard sci-fi, I'd say to go watch something like The Expanse.

You can't exactly call Trek soft or space opera, it's not like that space wizard franchise, after all. But I've just never filed it away in my mind as a "hard" sf series.

Personally, hi-tech, interstellar locations or futuristic travel, no medieval stuff, aliens, advanced robots or ai, no classic swords and shields stuff.

Xenosaga, yes.
Star Ocean 2, no. It has scifi elements, but it meanders in classic tropes
