I swear I've started this game 4 or 5 times and end up hating it every single time. The class limitations kill me, but I'm still somewhat interested in the characters and overall world.

Wish me luck

Inquisitor, I need you to collect 10 plants from the Hinterlands ! It's imperative for the inquisition to have those 10 plants and only you can get them !

it's not going to suddenly change over time

think you would be better off just watching someone else play it in this case

It's more fun if you use a super busted build to steamroll the combat. Archer artificer spamming unlimited leaping shots is a good one.

There was a time when Dragon Age was one of my favorite franchises. Bought the books and everything.

DA:I is the game that killed that. Utterly and completely.

At this point I don't even care about DA4. I probably won't even bother playing it when it comes out.

I thought DA:I was ass but I did enjoy the DLCs. I think I was burnt out with open world games at that point and the linear experience was a nice change of pace.

People shit on DA2, but it was never as bad as everyone made it out to be.

People complained because they didn't get to play as the Warden anymore, but Hawke was fine as a replacement, and it makes more sense to play as different characters in different regions while exploring different aspects of the world. Plus they got great VAs to play them. And the change meant they could have Hawke show up in later games, whereas we're never going to see the Warden again.

People complained because they changed the gameplay mechanics, but that was pretty much inevitable once the series went mainstream - and most people didn't flip their shit when Mass Effect 2 did the same thing.

People complained because it reused map assets - but again, Mass Effect did the same thing and no one cared. And it was fine since half the point was that the streets of Kirkwall all look the same (not to mention the whole game is framed as a story Varric is telling, so he's just leaving out details).

People complained because the story wasn't about a Chosen One saving the world, but if every story in the setting was that, it would get stupid very quickly (this is a problem the Elder Scrolls games already have). And a lot of people also complain about how cliche those types of stories have become, so you'd never please everyone no matter what you do anyway.

Meanwhile, DA2 had better music (than both DA:O and DA:I), strong characters (equal to DA:O and better than nearly everyone in DA:I), a strong story (albeit a more personal one), and did a better job setting up future stories than either DA:O or DA:I did (and DA:I seems to go out of its way to undo most of what you accomplish in both DA:O and DA2, as well as itself).

I really enjoyed DA2. DA:I broke me.

DA:I is about 1/3rd of a good DA game, dragged down by endless padding and slog, split focus, a desire to be more like Skyrim (and succeeding in all the worst ways), DLC that undoes most of what you've accomplished, and a reliance on the BS that is Dragon Age Keep.

DA2 left me excited for the next DA game. DA:I (combined with Andromeda and Anthem) have left me assuming BioWare isn't capable of making great games anymore.

barely. mass effect barely changed, it went from a slower shooter, to a slightly faster one because the skills were arcadeified.

dragon age though, went from an isometric strategy crpg to a goddamn hack n slash. a complete genre shift.

it would be like if baldurs gate 3 was a first person shooter instead of a crpg.

Coincidentally, DA:I just went up as Epic's free game this week. I still haven't played any of them, though, despite having owned Origins for a while.

It's less that they aren't capable and more that they aren't allowed. EA's done its usual thing of taking a studio people like and forcing them to chase profitable trends regardless of how well the studio can be expected to handle that style of game, hoping to cash in on the combination of brand recognition and pandering to the flavour of the month. Toss in some unrealistic deadlines (both in general and because they're working in unfamiliar territory) that mean the devs are under unsustainable amounts of pressure and have to rush to cobble something together, and you've got a recipe for games that just aren't very good.

I can't get through DA:I either. Just so boring and super terrible combat. It's crazy they peaked at DAO. Bioware truly can't make CRPGs anymore. Despite practically pioneering with Nwn.
DA:I was bad when it was released. And since BG3, it has aged terribly.

I'll be honest, I never played DA2. I was hesitant prior to release and after release, I couldn't bring myself to try it.

Anyways, I don't hate Inquisition as much as I have the previous times I've tried to play it. The class limitations are still garbage and it really shows that EA has no idea what an RPG is.

But the combat is clicking, despite being so much worse than DA:O.

The game is visibly gorgeous, but the map design is frustrating and the minimap is absolutely the most worthless minimap I've ever dealt with.

Just playing in the Hinterlands, I'm convinced this game might actually have more "content" than BG3. But, boy... This is just yet another game that BG3 makes look bad in retrospect. There's so many worthless collectibles and encounters, and the map is unnecessarily large, not scaled well at all.

The pacing also sucks.

That said... I'm having fun, curved standards and all

Last time I played it I tried modding all the tedium out of it, things like Skipping the item pickup animation, faster move speed, less restrictive classes and alot more I forget. Still an awful game imo but I actually enjoyed it for once.

DA2 actually isn't too bad in all honesty, atleast compared to Inquisition, feels much more like Origins if you temper expectations a whole lot and understand there's 5 whole level layouts. It's really just a tragic game that was aborted mid-pregnancy by EA and forced to live as a fetus of a game, it's essentially a release game Beta.
