Sog-Gee's Realm (Water)
Don't Wait Until Night
Birdo II

Birdo II > Sog-Gee's Realm (Water) > Don't Wait Until Night > Tap De Papapaya (Long Version) > Neat Beat Retreat

Sog-Gee's Realm (Water) - 8
very nice song, probably deserves higher but idk lol these ratings are all by ear

Neat Beat Retreat - 7
eh it's fine

Don't Wait Until Night - 7.5
literally why would you go for the Aria of Sorrow version over Harmony of Despair or smth? like it's still got a great melody and whatnot, but why would you *actively* choose GBA instruments for any song besides like Let's Go! from Superstar Saga

Tap De Papapaya (Long Version) - 7
this would be a decent bit higher without the TTS

Rubia - 6
this is not the kind of music I expected from the album art. anyways it's fffffffffffffffffffine but I have to imagine this works far better in context

Birdo II - 8.5
this song is wild and I love it

Sog-Gee's Realm (Water)
Can't Wait Until Night
Rubia

Was going to comment how much I liked the soft David Wise-esque sound of Sog-Gee's Realm, but now I see it actually is David Wise. Good song. Actually think I like it more than a lot of his DKC songs. Neat Beat Retreat has catchy percussion but mostly doesn't do a lot for me, and I'm not huge on the vocal part. Ok actually I take it back the instrumental solo part in the middle is actually cool, but not quite enough to vote for it.

Not really a fan of the soundfont in Don't Wait Until Night, though the song is fine otherwise. Vocal samples bordering on spoken-word like in Tap de Papapaya are one of my biggest turnoffs in music though and will end up entirely cratering most songs they appear in. I do like the chiptune backing part, but yeah.

Rubia was my pet nomination this year, and I'm honestly surprised it even made it into the contest at all, but I'm glad at least some people ended up liking it enough for that. I don't really have much to say about it though. It's just a very pretty song with good vocals, and sometimes if you're good enough at the particular thing I'm looking for then you don't really need to offer anything else. Birdo II is actually a pretty cool rock song. There's also not a lot to this one but I do like the groove it's got going quite a bit.

Rubia > Sog-Gee's Realm > Birdo II > Neat Beat Retreat > Don't Wait Until Night > Tap de Papapaya

Sog-Gee's Realm (Water)
Tap de Papapaya (Long Version)
Birdo II

Sog-Gee is my favorite song of an OST I already like very much. I quite vibe with the signature style of modern David Wise. This synth bit at the end is so cool as well. This feels like a little extract from Tropical Freeze. So good. Future funk??!! Well that's a way to complicate things. I love how the initial vocals are just like Rats' Birthday, before it transitions into Copacabana. Hmm.. can I resist voting Snake for this? Uhhh... I can't. But it's some fierce temptation.

This version is kinda weird. I can't say I like the crunch of this. The song does get a lot better as it approaches the loop point though, last part going into awesome territory. I think I'm conflicted. No.... no way... Microsoft Sam hitting the conga line. Yeah, the TTS is a weird choice for the vocals but damn the instrumental is so fun. It just get better as it goes! This is a jam, it makes me happy.

This is a tougher match that I expected. Rubia touches a little on my heart, the vocalist is really passionate and, albeit late, the instrumental hits very nicely and strongly, it's just a lovely job. I had a high expectative for a song called Birdo II; and wow, it doesn't dissapoint. The initial notes, the slowdown bit, the fast flowing piano and powerful guitar, the fusion spirit. I mean, it's kind of a show-off song considering the video, but it earns it. I am voting Birdo, but with apologies to one of the best vocal songs so far.

Neat Beat Retreat
Can't Wait Until Night
Birdo II

would've liked a diff upload of cant wait till night but oh well it still bangs

From TunnelScene:
Sog-Gees Realm (Snake Pass)
Can't Wait Until Night (Castlevania: AoS)
Birdo II (SlipDream Resonator)

in the wise jungle

in the escalator in spain

whenever someone tell me teh gba sound is bad I tell them go drain your -289 minimum abducted setback from whatever scenery you steal your fucking lame ass clean ears from and become very empowered. anyways I like teh gba cv osts a great deal, the actual way it sounds is a big part of why, one way I will agree with tazzy is fake ass crunched down guitar samples in vgm like this is pretty cool (sorta regret not nomming anything with that for him topic since he's like the only one who'd want that other than maybe fl)

songs with great Microsoft Sam moments such as this and endless 9. it's hard for me to conceive this as an actual vgm song and not a imaginary joke someone in siiva gunner made like what if this was on a vgm song

the girl song

I glad varra has music that is vgm now, maybe fortnite ii will become eligible after all

Neat Beat Retreat
Tap de Papapaya (Long Version)
Birdo II

It's no secret that David Wise has been a master of cool ambiance since the DKC days. I don't think I'd prefer Sog-Gee over any of my favorites from that trilogy (and trust me, there's a LOT that I enjoy), but regardless it's so delightful to listen to. The instruments sound straight out of Wise's work from Tropical Freeze, giving it that really nice jungle feel for our friend Noodle here.

I have no idea what the heck LCD Dream Escalator is - I legit thought it was a sequel of some kind to LSD Dream Emulator - but I'm SO down for this quirky disco song. I could see it being a Warioware song of sort with how silly and catchy is.

Can't Wait Until Night is a fun enough CV track, it simply satisfies my "action energy" quota that I look for in songs of this kind.

More quirkiness with a happy flavor! The mix of vocals and upbeat synths/drums make me think of this as a lost Katamari song, though I think Katamari vocals would find a way to be even weirder (or pleasant) and still keep that catchiness to it. I'm having a pretty nice time with this one.

Rubia sounds pretty and is a nice enough ballad, but I can tell this is the one that would hit me more effectively if I played through whatever emotional story beat this is attached to. It's nice enough as is.

Hell yeah, cool prog piece to finish this set! God, the piano, guitar and bass is such a hard-hitting trio here. I only wish there were more to this instead of being just above 2 minutes, but those 2 minutes are solid in what they delivered. I'm happy I supported this new find!

LCD Dream Escalator - Neat Beat Retreat
Let's Tap - Tap de Papapaya (Long Version)
Honkai Impact 3rd - Rubia

MATCH 1

Sog-Gees realm is nice with an aquatic feel to it that fits what I assume is the theme for the game, or at the very least the level it plays in. Feels like something that might come out of a Donkey Kong game like Tropical Freeze (immediately after writing this, I checked the composer and saw that it was David Wise, go figure lol). Its not the kind of song Id be singing praises of, but its a nice song that works well.

The big band sounds in Neat Beat Retreat is really cool. The saxophone at 0:58 is definitely the coolest and most memorable part of the song. The part right after thats neat too. I dont really like the vocals in the song though. It has a bit of a bad cheesiness to it to me.

MATCH 2

The SNES guitar intro is very cool and definitely the best part of the song to me. The rest of the song has a pretty decent melody. Probably one of the better Castlevania songs Ive heard to my memory.

Tap de Papapaya is quite the song. I cant get over the Microsoft text-to-speech vocals. Thats actually hilarious to me that they chose to use those default text-to-speech voices as the vocalists. But humor aside, and especially since I try not to take that into account when weighing two songs together for their musical quality, theres a very catchy melody to it with the synth lead and the singer in the chorus. The melody of the vocals in the bridge is pretty good too.

This is actually an insanely difficult match, and I had to listen to these two songs many times over and sit on it overnight and for the rest of the next day to be able to decide this match when filling out my favorites bracket. Even now, its still very close, but I still feel like I have to give a slight edge to Tap de Papapaya.

MATCH 3

Rubia is a very nice, heartfelt song. I dont feel too strongly about the buildup, but the lead-in to the chorus at 1:39 and the chorus itself is great! I really like the song from that point on. The chorus has a really powerful melody thats heavily enhanced by the drums and the strings.

Birdo II is an interesting song for sure. My favorite part is the modulating arpeggios in the intro and elsewhere. The rest of the song is pretty decent prog rock. I definitely like this song!

Rubia = Tap de Papapaya (Long Version) > Can't Wait Until Night > Birdo II > Neat Beat Retreat > Sog-Gee's Realm (Water)

Pretty good day of songs today.
