It would've required reporting to the boss of my boss. I had three rounds of interviews. Last Tuesday, I checked on workday the status and it said "Process Completed." That almost always means you didn't get the role if you weren't contacted prior. Also, it doesn't even send out an automated e-mail. You just keep checking until workday updates.

I held on to a very slim hope since I thought it'd be messed up if the boss of my boss didn't tell me anything prior since they talk a big game about wanting to develop people and best practices. Well, as of today someone external is taking over the role. I know since I checked the org structure.

Kinda super annoyed they wouldn't even tell me beforehand.

Maybe see if you can find a similar position at a different company?

If I didn't have a mortgage I'd give zero weeks notice right now.

My wife applied for an internal job to replace her old boss but was never officially told no. But they reopened the ad and interviewed another round of applicants. They told her they were doing that and told her not to be discouraged and that doesnt mean she was denied. Then they decided to not fill the position altogether and hold off until the fall. But they added more responsibilities to her that include what the role wouldve entailed.

Yea....that is what they are counting on. The external guy likely had to go through the same thing and it is why they coming to your company.

Why promote when we can pay less to have her do the job of the promotion? Companies do this all the time.

A raise? Nah, I need to go. I had one external job I thought I had a real good chance of getting and had several rounds. Then HR, never got back to me after promising they would and they reposted the exact same role with a lower title and presumably lower pay. HR reached out to me several times to interview for that role and never mentioned the previous one.

Something similar happened at my last job. My supervisor quit and I was thrust into the role doing everything she did plus my job for over 3 months. I finally said fuck it and officially applied to get paid for it, then they hired some moron from outside the company and expected me to train him.

Wish I walked out and left them hanging since I was the only one in the building who could make purchase orders. They would have been fucked and would have had to bring someone in from corporate.

I just got a meeting invite to talk with the hiring manager (the boss of my boss). For tomorrow. Maybe I don't know how this works, but my understanding is that a key component of feedback is that it needs to be timely and this ain't it.

I deal with this on the opposite end. I lead about 200 people and often have internals apply for jobs that we ultimately do not hire.

Leaving and finding something else is obviously an option but you may also want to talk to someone you know that was involved and figure out why you didnt get it. Do it in a professional way, trying to figure out what I can improve so that I dont miss out on future opportunities type thing.

The way you respond means a lot if you intend to stay in the organization. Even if you dont, depending on the industry and your position, how you respond may follow you.

HR is trained to say this but it isn't very true, unless you like meltdown but most people don't. Even then they won't hear about it.

It depends on a lot of things. What market are you in, what kind of job do you do, what level you are at. I regularly get calls about former employees and how people leave or take bad news definitely has helped and hurt.

For example, I fired an employee recently for something in their personal life that reflected poorly on the organization. They understand and took it like a pro and Im giving glowing recommendations about them and trying to help them land on their feet. I have also had someone not get a promotion (they werent ready for) and completely check out before leaving. Gave them terrible feedback. Smaller industry and market than some but the point is, how you leave can matter.

Update: the meeting did not happen. He didn't want to have it until getting all the feedback from the other interviewers. I'm confused how that's the reason as my last interview was nearly a month ago and I would have thought he'd use feedback from the other interviewers to make his decision. Rescheduled to Thursday.
