Newsmax may have deleted evidence related to Smartmatic's lawsuit against them. I really hope Smartmatic forces them to go through the whole trial.

Spoliation is serious business, much more if it was intentional and/or relevant. There's a reason companies send out a "DO NOT DELETE ANYTHING" notice when sued.

He has his own representation, Kise and Blanche are representing Trump while Woodward and Dadan are representing Nauta. Dadan is a former public defender who's defended over 3,000 cases so it's not like he's got a total chump.

It's an insidious look at someone who is absolutely wrapped up in the MAGA cult.

I've been wondering for a while how we're supposed to deal with the MAGA cult on a societal level moving forward. Talking to them rarely, if ever, helps. Outside of close family members that they already trust getting through to them, there's basically no chance that random MAGA person is going to be swayed by any sort of reality presented by someone they don't know.

I've had to stop associating with people because I got fed up with trying.

I just removed them from my life mostly. Fuck em, they're not worth my time.

I took substantial efforts to pull out extended family members that had fallen into the QAnon rabbit hole.

At the end of the day, they more or less wound up in the MAGA/Q-adjacent zone. I gave up at that point.

I'm of this mindset. My older brother told me I had a Demons heart because I disagreed with him about cannibalistic queer people.

They don't want to change their opinions because then they'd have to come to terms with how their mindset hurt themselves and others. They have to do it on their own.

I always thought that the reason they bound themselves to such a poor-quality identity is because they didn't have time to go "shopping" for a good one. Too burdened by... whatever. Long work hours? Lack of education? Lack of money? So they just bind to the easiest one that seems to allow them to get money or fulfill them spiritually.

So, the answer seems to be to increase the amount of resources in society that allows them to have dignity and not just scrounge for these kinds of moralistic scraps.

I have no idea how exactly you get a Trump cult member out of it and to stop consuming conservative propaganda media, and each person is different and react differently to pushback. They're so hardwired by propaganda talking points that it's really hard to get through to them. Maybe facing consequences for something they did and going to jail could be a good start in getting them out of the cult. At least you won't be able to watch Fox News while your there I think, although I've never been to jail personally.

I think the calculation is that having the jury go into deliberate before Memorial Day might force a quick/rushed response instead of taking their time.

It seems like there's less incentive now for people to engage with reality. We've seen the right-wing alternative media sphere take shape and now right-wing social media. I've read about other right-wing businesses starting up like financial providers and web hosting companies that are basically cool with all the forms of bigotry right-wingers want to engage in. I think that's where we're going with the right building a separate social and economic sphere where they can be insulated from the rest of American society as much as possible.

There's 2 studies, one where they switched from Faux News to CNN for 30 days and one where they watched no political media for 30 days. In both cases their extremism lessened and they started to believe more factually correct things.

Literally watching Faux News puts you into a negative level of being factually informed and merely turning it off greatly facilitates increased factuality lmao.

I also hear semi-frequent anecdotal testimony from various callers talking about how a family member became a better and more down to earth person when they turned off Faux News.

That's why whenever I talk about the indoctrination degree of Faux News gaslighting them into a false reality I either lead with Faux -> no news at all or just don't even mention then the Faux -> CNN study, though I do more often than not because 2 separate studies, with different parameters, leading to a similar result strengthens the argument.

I just tell people that they're being lied to. What they do with that information, but a seed of doubt could sprout.

The situation started when McGovern, the top Democrat on the Rules Committee, referred to the Republican members of Congress who have attended Trumps hush money trial in New York. Maybe they want to distract from the fact that their candidate for president has been indicted more times than hes been elected, he said.

Rep. Jerry Carl, R-Ala., who was in the chair presiding over debate, reminded McGovern to refrain from engaging in personalities toward the presumed presidential nominees.

McGovern shot back, asking whether it was unparliamentary to state a fact.

He then asked why a Republican member last week could call the Trump trial a sham on the House floor and not face the same admonishment by the chair. During a floor speech May 15, Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, repeatedly referred to the sham trial against the former president in New York, which he said relies on an unreliable witness being presided over by a biased judge.

While Carl said he would not weigh in on that, McGovern started going through Trumps legal situation.

"He's also charged with conspiring to overturn the election, he said of Trump. Hes also charged with stealing classified information, and a jury has already found him liable for rape and in a civil court. And yet, in this Republican-controlled House, its OK to talk about the trial, but you have to call it a 'sham.'

At that point, Rep. Erin Houchin, R-Ind., interjected, asking that McGoverns words be taken down. Representatives can make such a request if they feel one of their colleagues has used disorderly language.

After more than an hour as staff members huddled on the floor, Carl ruled that McGoverns "offensive words" were out of order, citing past rulings by House speakers.

Specifically, Carl pointed to rules that prohibit members from using "personally offensive" language about the president.
