Board 8 > Rate the Ace Attorney character: Phoenix Wright (series-wide spoilers)

Rules:

1. Rate each character on a scale from 1 to 10 with 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest. Anything above 10 gets rounded down to a 10, and anything below a 1 gets rounded up to a 1.

8. Pretty much every character from Ace Attorney will be rated. The schedule will go in chronological game order in the West (with AAI2 being right after AAI just for consistency). When a character debuts and gets a major speaking role, they will show up (so Trucy appearing for a moment in 4-1 doesn't count as a 4-1 character). Major characters get their own day and minor characters are all ranked at once. All extremely minor characters (background, animals, mascots, and jury) will be rated on the final day.
9. The "roles" listed are: Defense, Rival, Assistant, Detective, Judge, Victim, Defendant, Culprit, Witness, Background, Animal, Mascot, and Jury. Sorry, I'm not pointing out accomplices.

My rating: 9/10

Phoenix is one of my favorite protagonists in all of entertainment. He's incredibly likable, both in the mundane moments and during the emotionally high moments. He grows so much in every game of the OT. He only loses points because his story doesn't end at the OT. Notably, the AJ appearance really brings him down to being unrecognizable. They salvaged it with his DD and SOJ appearances, but it's hard to come back from that crazy swerve. I do like that he comes off as far more respectable, especially when controlling Apollo and Athena, which fits with where his character's at. Unfortunately, they kinda give Phoenix a few "notable" characteristics to separate him from Athena and especially Apollo. DD-era Phoenix is known for his bluffing, which......I mean, he bluffs a few times!

Come on, he's Phoenix. Despite the series' best efforts to ruin him, he's still the best.

This has to be the easiest 10 other than Maya and Edgeworth

It feels kind of stupid to not give him a 10. He's Phoenix Wright. Whatever.

There are times where I wish they were a bit sharper or more interesting with his characterization in the later games, I just think there's a little bit more they could have done with him being Trucy's father and Apollo and Athena's boss and mentor. That aspect of him as a character should be really interesting to explore and they just don't do it quite enough. And I don't really feel like he's the same guy as he was in AA4. But there are times where I could hold this same criticism of Edgeworth and I'm going to give Edgeworth a 10 obviously.

What AJ did to him is dirty but I do like the Hobonix design.

He's not my favourite character, he might not even be my tenth favourite character, but he's such a strong protagonist. I don't even mind some of the AJ stuff! (I do wish he emoted more like his previous self and that the forgery shit was actually "earned", but everything else was fine)

Design wise, he's simple but iconic, and damn, do I LOVE his older look in DD/SoJ.

You guys are probably wright on this.
