I heard about this on Techlinked the other day and honestly it sounds rad as hell for my no-short-term-memory-havin-ass brain.

I can see why it'd be problematic for a lot of folks tho even if it can be disabled, which it allegedly can.

So it needs a special chip to do this stuff, and it happens on your machine, and only if you want to buy a Windows machine that specifically does this. I would never do that, but for someone who wants to, go right ahead.

According to Microsoft, Recall will consistently take screenshots of users' activity on their PC in the background while they go about their regular day on their computer. Using AI, the feature will scan through the text and visuals seen in each screen capture and make a searchable index of this activity for users. If a user is trying to retrieve something they did on their computer earlier in their history, Recall can pull it up, thanks to the searchable archive created by the AI-scanned screenshots.

While these screenshots will be stored locally on users' own computer, Microsoft has since shared that sensitive data, including passwords, addresses, and health information, won't be removed and will be visible to anyone who has access to the files on the device. Cybersecurity experts have shared concerns about what bad actors, such as hackers, could do with this information. Furthermore, because this feature works in the background around-the-clock, users may be unaware of which data, exactly, is being stored.

Yeah fuck that

Yeah, I always thought this was a bad idea, but once I learned that they will NOT remove sensitive information in these snapshots, that's a huge security concern, not just personal but for businesses as well. This is a really stupid idea, even moreso if they make it mandatory for future Windows PCs.

Yeah, that feature is a terrible idea. I'm assuming you can turn it off, but there will be a ton of people who either won't think/know to turn it off.

Can confirm, the second this stops being 100% optional is the second I make the full jump to Linux.

Only computer I use that's not Linux currently is my gaming machine but I'll switch that too if I need to.

Let's be real, it'll be more like "what was that porn video from a week ago where a deer head was mounted on the wall, the chick was blonde, and they did 3 or 4 positions?"

I don't know what the use case is for this that doesn't already get covered with bookmarks, browser tab sorting, or just a text file at the most extreme

Well, no, I know the *actual* use case is "yay, sellable data/free model training", but like as a user, why?

Probably intended for enterprise customers who want quick server rollbacks. I don't believe the average person would use this much.

The way they've described the feature its essentially just pressing print screen every 5 seconds and scanning the picture with AI to add searchable tags to the photo. No one has a genuine use for this outside of using it as spyware to track your employees or children.

Sounds like a resource hog (possibly minor).

Guess it's time for me to start dual-booting Nobara to better learn linux.

I've read the allocation for these screenshots is like 15 GB, maybe more. That's space that could be used for better things, tbh.
