17 different families harmed after your police waited 77 minutes to go inside and thats what they settled for?

Ughhh I guess there's more stipulations and maybe that just one of the lawsuits? But still seems like a slap in the face

Considering it's Texas, that's 2 million more than I thought they'd ever get.

It's still not nearly worth what losing a child is, but I guess 50k is better than nothing.

I think its 2 million total for all the 17 families ..not 2 million a family... ....may be wrong tho but as far as I can tell by that article

Yeah, there had better be some serious stipulations in this settlement, such as state-mandated MAJOR changes to law enforcement, admissions of guilt, firings, forcing the officers involved to contribute to the settlement money, and FOIA'ing damn near every bit of information about the fiasco, including the most embarrassing parts.

And a big one: In ADDITION to that 2 million, the state (with STATE tax dollars, not federal) will pay the psych costs for victims and their families for the rest of their lives, and the medical costs for injured survivors for the rest of their lives.

Something about this stinks, given it's Texas and how thuggish the police in this state are and how our justice system is completely in the government's pocket I think they were strong armed at most and outright threatened at best to take this "offer" that most of them won't even get. After all, this is the same state that let that woman who managed to sneak by the police and save her kid get harassed by that police department so much she was basically run out of the county and probably by now out of the state, a story that quickly disappeared as major news outlets didn't cover it and local news definitely isn't gonna say shit.

Texas is so close to being Florida with how captured our government is by Republicans and how brazenly corrupt they are in their control and voter suppression, last major election in my county had a trump supporter outside the library waving his gun around and the local cops did not remove him nor did he get any coverage.

This is like staying late off the clock to finish an assignment.

The city can afford it. They could afford to send their cowardly officers to non stop crisis response classes to prevent this from happening, yet can't pay restitution for those cowardly officers wasting tax payer dollars as children are massacred a couple feet away.

Yeah I was under the assumption you couldn't sue a government agency. I know I was told we couldn't sue the school when I was growing up you had to sue a individual or individuals

They do. Cops're known for dropping flash-bangs on toddlers in their cribs.

They could have tried it.

flash grenades are still explosive, so they actually could have killed a child. Still been better than the whole class getting murdered while the command at scene sat on his ass and let it happen though.

I want all the higher ups involved in this who made the call not to go in face criminal charges. But sadly that isnt going to happen

Flashbangs can cause building fires. (Sadly this doesn't prevent SWAT from using them in no-knock raids, anyway)

(1) Paywall. Got a Wayback link, or a subscription-shared link?

(2) I got to read the first couple paragraphs before I hit the paywall. With only that context...

Video games don't cause violence and mass shooting. They just don't. Jack Thompson no longer has a career because they don't. BUT...

There's something to be said for the "accuracy" of shooters like CoD that are basically gun porn. They're, in some ways, like glorified firearms catalogues meant to hype the guns more than the game play. Even if they're not using real names anymore, tell me how hard it really is to figure it out?

It's irrelevant. A person who is a mass shooter and also played video games was already insane in the first place. The "realism" doesn't matter.

Plus in terms of context most video games are more or less not reenacting school shootings as their plots but rather like war scenarios and stuff of that nature which are a vastly different thing.
