An estimated 85-percent of Neuralinks brain-computer interface (BCI) implant threads connected to the first human patients motor cortex are now completely detached and his brain has shifted inside his skull up to three times what the company expected, volunteer Noland Arbaugh told The Wall Street Journal on Monday. Arbaugh also stated Neuralink has since remedied the initial performance issues using an over-the-air software update and is performing better than before, but the latest details continue to highlight concerns surrounding the companys controversial, repeatedly delayed human implant study.

Neuralinks coin-sized N1 BCI implants 64 wires thinner than a human hair are inserted a few millimeters into the motor cortex. Each thread contains 16 electrodes that translate a users neural activity into computer commands like typing and cursor movement. Around 870 of the 1024 electrodes in Arbaughs implant are no longer functionalan issue that allegedly took Neuralink a few weeks to remedy, reports The WSJ. When Arbaugh asked if his implant could be removed, fixed, or even replaced, Neuralinks medical team relayed they would prefer to avoid another brain surgery and instead gather more information.

I remember literally everyone knowing this wasn't ready for human trials when it was announced. I guess it ended up as ridiculous as everyone was expecting.

It isn't an issue of the guy behind it, it's an issue of if it's actually ready yet.

Neuralink has faced criticisms of cutting significant corners in order to try and get their product out first (because they aren't actually the leaders in this field) which creates very legitimate safety concerns for a technology that has such a significant impact on a person. And if those safety concerns become safety issues, it can kill the entire technology, and it would be because Neuralink is cutting corners to be the first product to release.

I think people want this to fail because of a perception that this technology wasn't safe in vivo, yet it was nevertheless fast tracked to phase I testing. The fact that Elon has smeared his slimy little associative fingers all over it is just icing on the cake for the broader internet discourse.

There's absolutely people who want this to fail purely because Elon is associated with it.

Personally I want every company that's in this field to have breakthrough after breakthrough, the potential for the tech is just too high.

Also I'm going to be super real here, as long as the test subjects are made fully aware of the risks? I honestly don't mind there being human testing. To some people even with extreme risks involved they very well may consider the potential quality of life improvement worthwhile and who am I to say they're wrong?

And these problems are specifically because Elon Musk is behind it. This is what he does. See also: all the issues with Teslas and autopilot

How so? The potential to help so many people is so huge, I find it hard to find that horrifying as long as everybody volunteering are fully aware of the risks and are willing to take them.

My problem with human experimentation is when consent is thrown out the window like was done back in the day on minorities, members of the military and people in prison. When people are able to give informed consent though?

What does this even mean. What was the expected "shift", what unit is used to measure that.
When there is a high enough pressure, brain tissue will be pushed around in the skull, which can be deadly.
If I have to guess and read between the lines, most of the inserted wires irritated the brain tissue so much so it swelled and pushed out most of the wires, which built up a pressure in the brain.

I can't say for sure, since I've never been in the position (and hopefully never will) but I suspect if my life was in danger or I had significantly lowered quality of life, I would also willingly be a test subject for something like this. it's made by people who clearly (mostly) know what they are doing, it has a chance to provide significant benefits to me, and even if it doesn't fully work it's helpful in gathering information that can be used to further help me and/or others who end up in tthe same position.

if you're in a bad situation to start out with it seems pretty reasonable to take calculated risks to improve it

I'm pretty convinced that we're headed to a corporate ruled cyberpunk style dystopia and Musk is more a symptom than the disease.

I don't want the tech to fail. I'm all for breakthroughs and whatnot. However, I don't trust it because of Elon being behind it. And I don't trust it because of the trials I've heard on the monkeys. Things like monkeys were in so much agony that they started biting their fingers off or something.

I was originally going to say that I really doubt people actually want the tech to fail, just that they just don't trust it to succeed because of Elon. However, a few posts in this topic have proven me wrong. I do think it's weird to want to fail. And to want it to fail because you don't trust tech like that in general makes no sense. There's a big difference between not trusting that it is safe and actively wanting it to fail/not be safe.
